Turning Red
By: Hilda Saldaña
If you are a Disney fan you have probably watched this movie. Turning Red is one
of the latest Pixar movies released, and not only is an excellent film inspired by anime in
its animations, but it is also a story that portrays the chinese culture. Moreover, it shows
a well done narrative, in which we follow the path that all teenagers have to go through
in order to discover the real themselves.

In the beginning, the film achieves the feat of humanizing an adolescent as it is

Meilin Lee, the protagonist. This film also speaks about a variety of common issues,
never approached before by Pixar, or even Disney itself, such as the stigma around
menstruation, common physical changes that occur during puberty, and how Meilin and
her family deals with all this, and by all means I think this is a few features I liked the
most from the movie.

Therefore, there is Meilin who is a chinese-canadian living in a traditional family

environment, which means that being the third or second-generation from an immigrant
family, Meilin has to stand out in school, at home and even in the family business. All
this causing a huge stress (burn out) for just a 13-year-old girl, whose level of exigency
led her to reveal against her mother authority, which I think is the main reason why I
enjoy watching this pure illustration of a true parent- child relationship.

Additionally, another aspect I found important to recognize is the plot of Meilin

turning into a cute, chubby , red panda (thanks to an ancestral heritage) that makes her
be in a cicle of strong emotions while she learns how to cope with the shock of
transforming into this creature overnight, it is fantastic and well-executed. Considering
the opportunities Meilin obteins in her school because of the Panda, she and her group
of friends took advantage of that by earning money for the concert tickets of their
favourite boyband.

Overall, I strongly recommend this movie, especially if you are a teenager,

because it really shows the genuine side of dealing with strong emotions, and maybe
coming against the generational trauma and family pressure, if you decide to watch it
you will thank me later.
