Muscles in Action
Introduction:
Muscles enable animals to move. They are the only body tissues that can contract because of
contractile proteins such as myosin and actin—moving a body part, such as the hand, is
achieved by contracting by contacting certain muscles while relaxing others. Some
movements, such as holding your hand in front of you for a certain period, are so slight that
you do not notice them. The cerebellum is the specific part of the brain that controls such
voluntary movement. In this activity, you will witness how your brain makes these small
movements visible.
Objectives:
 Observe small movements of muscles in the arms
 Investigate how muscles behave under tension
Materials:
Spoon
Hairpin or paper clip
Stopwatch or your cell phone
Procedure:
1. Hold the spoon parallel to the top of the table. Be sure not to touch the table with your arm.

2. Place the hairpin over the spoon, as shown in the figure. You may ask somebody to assist you.
3. Raise the spoon just enough for the hairpin to touch the table and for the head of the hairpin to
rest on the edge of the spoon, as shown in the figure below.

4. Now hold the spoon as steady as possible for 30 seconds. Observe and record what happens.
5. Repeat step 4. But this time, hold the spoon more tightly. Observe and record what happens.
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for 60 seconds and 120 seconds.

Observations: Write your observations on each column (1 point each)

Hairpin above the table Seconds I cannot handle it
Anymore and I stop

Questions: Answer these questions in 3-5 sentences.

1. What did you observe about the movement of the hairpin when you tightened your grip on the
spoon? How do you explain this action?
The hairpin was more movable than the one with a looser grasp when I tightened my hold on the
spoon. With a tightened grip, the muscles behave under strain, which means that when the
muscles are under tension, they temporarily contract or shrink the muscle fibers. The muscle can
contract more and aid in the relaxation of other muscles when your grasp is loose.

2. How can you relate this activity to what happens when you stand in the same place for an
extended time?
Long periods of standing might cause your legs to tremble and make you feel uneasy in your
stance. It can be related to this activity because it dealt with what the muscle will do when
engaged in a prolonged action. The muscle start to shake after doing a activity for a prolonged
amount of time Because the muscles start contracting and releasing at a faster rate when they
are engaged in an activity for an extended period of time, which causes them to tremble

RESEARCH
(SCOPE and LIMITATION)
Last week, you were taught on how to construct the Significance of Study and Scope and
Limitations of your study. We tackled about what does the scope and limitation want to present
such as the variables of subjects, the extent into which your study will cover, the factors and
challenges that the researcher might encounter and other things related to the topic but are
beyond the control of the researcher. Moreover, we also discussed about the benefits of
conducting your SIP. You were given some examples which serves as your basis in writing the
Significance, scope and limitation of your own SIP.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Direction: Construct a scope and limitations based on your approved research title.

Research Title: Saba Banana Peels (Musa balbisiana) as an Alternative Component of

Plastic Bags in Bioplastic Production

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). The use of bioplastics made from Saba
banana peels will help DENR in protecting and conserving the pollution by reducing the chance of
possible environmental issues, including plastic pollution.

Economy. This study can boost the economy because by using Saba banana peels, the costs of
manufacturing will be lower than the costs of manufacturing petroleum based plastics. This will also
generate profit because people will use it more than petroleum based plastics.

Farmers. They could be enticed to plant and grow more Saba banana peels in order to produce bioplastics
and gain more profit. It can also provide farmers a more environmentally friendly method to suppress
weeds, protect soil and water resources, fertilize crops, and to integrate with nature effectively to manage
their farms.
Plastic Consumers. This product will reduce the likelihood of having a negative impact on someone's
health. It also saves them a lot of money because the product is less expensive than other commercial
goods owing to the abundance of the component.

Future Researchers. The results of this study can be applied and used as a foundation for future
researchers. It can be used as a starting point for research into strategies to improve the quality of
bioplastics as well as general research into bioplastic manufacturing from Saba banana peel.

Scope and Limitation
Direction: Construct a scope and limitations based on your approved research title.

Research Title: Saba Banana Peels (Musa balbisiana) as an Alternative Component of

Plastic Bags in Bioplastic Production

This research will focus on making use of Saba banana peels as a component to create biodegradable,
environmentally friendly, and cost-effective plastics and no other type of bananas. Except for the
peelings, the researchers will use no other parts of the banana or its plant. Recent research and studies will
be used as a reference when making bioplastics from banana peels. The study will solely compare the
bioplastic product to commercial plastics in terms of true tests that will take place in Tuguegarao City.
