Mental and Emotional Health

(Triggers,Warning Signs, and Prevention, Treatment and Professional Care in Managing
Common Mental Health Disorders)

When stress is prolonged and if it is not managed well, you may develop mental illness.

MENTAL ILLNESS – are disorders that disrupt thinking, feelings, moods, and behaviors and
impair daily functioning (Donatelle, 2006). These disorders may be caused by prolonged stress
and mental and emotional suffering due to various triggers.

TRIGGERS – are events, conditions, or situations that may activate a person’s tendency to
experience symptoms of mental disorders.

TYPES OF MENTAL DISORDERS

A. MAJOR DEPRESSIVE DISORDER
When we face difficult situations, it is normal to feel sadness and grief. But, a
person may develop a major depressive disorder when depression is on daily basis,
characterized by persistent sadness, despair, and hopelessness” (Donatelle, 2006).

A.1. OTHER SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION:

 Lack or loss of motivation
 Overthinking (that others may say something bad about him/her

B. BIPOLAR DISORDER
It is also called manic-depressive disorder, it is a “form of depression

functions of the sense organs, thinks and imagines very differently than that of a
normal person.

A person may have this disorder when he or she experienced a traumatic
situation such as abused, raped, domestic violence, or involved in an accident.
Symptoms may vary from being spaced out (tulala), extreme sadness or
frustration, irritability, avoidance to people or isolation, and others.

Prevention, Treatment and Professional Care in Managing Common Mental

Health Disorders

What is prevention? Prevention in mental health aims to reduce the incidence,

prevalence, and recurrence of mental health disorders and their associated disability. Preventive
interventions are necessary and are based on modifying risk exposure and strengthening the
coping mechanisms of a person.
Mental disorders are diagnosed. It is always important to remember disorders can be
cured only by professional physicians that may determine the illness being experienced by a
person. Additionally, it is also needed to note that the symptoms of the disorders should be
prolonged and repeated. Not just because a person experiences one or two of the symptoms at
one time, it does not mean that he or she is already diagnosed with that illness or disorder.
In terms of treatment and cure, a professional physician may decide on whether to give
the patient a medication or subject him or her to routine therapy sessions.
