1. Explain the fact that there are only 10 types of functioning place (Ṭhāna),
although there are 14 functions of citta (Kicca).

There are 14 functions which cittas perform each;

(1) Rebirth-linking - Paṭisandhi

(2) Life-continuum - Bhavaṅga
(3) Adverting - Ᾱvajjana
(4) Seeing - Dassana
(5) Hearing - Savana
(6) Smelling - Ghāyana
(7) Tasting - Sāyana
(8) Touching - Phusana
(9) Receiving - Sampaṭicchana
(10) Investigating - Santīrana
(11) Determining - Voṭṭhabbana
(12) Javana (Dynamic) - Javana
(13) Following the Javana object - Tadārammaṇa
(14) Death - Cuti

The stages of Cittas are 10:

(1) Rebirth-linking - Paṭisandhi

(2) Life-continuum - Bhavaṅga
(3) Adverting - Ᾱvajjana
(4) Fivefold Sense Consciousness- Pañcaviññāṇa
(5) Receiving - Sampaṭicchana
(6) Investigating - Santīrana
(7) Determining - Voṭṭhabbana
(8) Javana (Dynamic) - Javana
(9) Following the Javana object - Tadārammaṇa
(10) Death - Cuti

The five functions (seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, touching) are performed
in the stage of five-fold sense consciousness. So, there are only 10 stage although
there are 14 functions of consciousness.

2. Explain when does the two-investigating consciousness with neutral feeling

arise at the six doors and escape from six doors.

The two-investing consciousnesses with neutral feeling have 5 functions. They

are –

(a) Rebirth-linking
(b) Life-continuum
(c) Death
(d) Following the Javana object and
(e) Investigating

If it performs the function of investigation or following the javana object, it

arises at the six-doors. But, if it performs one of the function of Paṭisandhi, Bhavaṅga
or Cuti, it escapes from six-doors.
