PATTERNS OF MANAGEMENT ANALYSIS
• The Empirical School
• The Decision Theory School

In this session, the reporter discussed the two patterns of management

analysis, which are the Empirical School and the Decision Theory School. These
various approaches to the study of management as propounded by specialists from
different disciplines have come to be called the Schools of Management Thought.

The Empirical School is an approach to management taken by scholars who

identify management as the study of experience, followed by efforts to learn from
the experience and then transfer the knowledge to practitioners and students. This
school of thought believes that by analyzing the experience of successful managers
or the mistakes of poor managers, we somehow can learn about applying the most
effective management techniques. Based on these learning points, I have learned
that Empirical school looks at the importance of experience in terms of
management. This shows that experience is the best teacher that affects the
improvement of how management is done. This thought is very important in taking
into consideration that within an institution, managerial tasks can be best done by
the person who already has higher experience in the work practice. This is why
part of the qualification in a management position requires a number of years of
service or relevant experience. Moreover, the experience can make way to incline
good management as it considers what practice to sustain or needs to improve.

Another topic is the Decision Theory School which is an approach that

concentrates on the rational decisions theory, which refers to the selection of a
suitable course of action from various possible alternatives. This approach may
deal with the decisions themselves, with the person or organizational group who
makes the decision, or with an analysis of the decision process. Many people use
the theory to examine the nature of the organizational structure, the psychological
and social reactions of individuals and groups, and the analysis of value
considerations with respect to goals, communication networks, and incentives by
widening the viewpoint far beyond the process of evaluating alternatives. This type
of management based on how I see it, sees the importance of a thorough decision-
making process, as a single decision may affect the whole. This type of
management pattern put emphasis on process-based management that is done on
a carefully analyzed course of action.

All in all, these two types of pattern of management analysis are very
essential in rationale managing the educational institution.
