EDUC 207: Management/ Supervision of Institution

Prof: Dr. Nick Pañares

February 11, 2023

If given the chance, what kind of educational supervisor you can be? Discuss
based on the principles of supervisory leadership.

Supervision is the process of overseeing the work of the members to ensure

that they are working according to the plans and policies of the organization or
institution. It can help create a more supportive, caring, and positive working
environment, providing a space for regular communication, problem-solving
increased teamwork. Within this, supervision involves leadership skills that are
essential to embody the purposeful role of supervision. Moreover, supervision
happens across professions or jobs, including in education and its institutions.

If given a chance to become an educational supervisor, I would be a

consultative-participative supervisor. This type of supervisory leadership is like
Theory Y or the so-called participative managerial trait. And this type emphasizes a
more open interpersonal relationship with everyone, especially with subordinates.

From my experience, I have already been to some tasks that require me to

supervise and lead my co-teachers. Though those tasks are smaller than the role of
an educational supervisor, those experience window small pictures of it. In the
experience that I have gone through, I usually led the group by openly seeking the
consensus of everybody under my watch. I seek their point of view to realign
everything, from the goal set by the educational system to my expectations and
theirs. Though there are some non-negotiables at hand, having a consensus body
does make a difference in the process of attaining the set goals. With this, I have
seen that this type of supervisory leadership can motivate everyone to be on a
single path to reaching the goal.

I believe that I could be a consultative-participative educational supervisor.

This leadership style of supervision is aligned with imbibing my personal values of
a leader, the 3Rs, Reliable, Resilient, and Respectful. I always envision supervising
people in a manner that everyone has a voice and involvement in planning and
managing. I value the essential matters under the education system and every role
is equally vital. Activating their full participation through a consultative process
makes a clearer goal as to the functions that each must take. Working in DepEd for
more than 2 years now has allowed me to learn from various leaders I met, and I
have seen what has been working well. Despite the tough matters that the field is
facing from time to time, activating empathic listening and participation in
communication and decision-making allows for a supportive working environment.

Thus, being an educational supervisor is a very rigorous task, and leading

with everyone willingly on board always makes a difference.
