Task 1: Translate the following text into English
Climate change, which is escalating globally, has become an increasingly “closer”
ally of poverty when it can push hundreds of people around the world into starvation. The
World Food Program (WFP) has just released its latest report to warn that climate change
is increasingly negatively impacting agricultural output worldwide, thereby leading to
food shortages to feed humans. This organization also predicted the risk of a global
famine if timely measures are not taken to slow the rate of global warming. And to prove
the above warnings, WFP cited the number of natural disasters in the world which has
doubled compared to the 90s of the last century, and the increase in extreme weather
which has forced many people to flee their homes for refuge – one of the main reasons
for hunger. Mr.Gernot Laganda, WFP’s Head of disaster risk reduction, emphasized that
hunger will increase proportionally with Earth’s temperature.
While 2018 witnessed the heaviest impacts of climate change ever with the arrival
of ferocious heat waves in Europe and North America and superstorms in the Pacific and
Atlantic Oceans, the number of people worldwide being severely undernourished is 82
million, which is an increase of about 11 million people compared to 2017, and this is the
first time in decades that the number of people in severe undernourishment has increased.
Therefore, WFP thinks that efforts to reduce world hunger are becoming vainer due to
natural disasters related to climate change and chronic conflicts.
