5. Time Allocation:
- Theory: 15 periods
- Practice: 15 periods
- Autonomous learning: Students are encouraged self-study while subject to the teacher’s
periodical assessment. The minimum time for self-study is 60 hours.
6. Prerequisites:
- English competency required is A2 (CEFR)
7. Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of the course, students will achieve:
7.1. Knowledge: Students will be able to:
- use and develop the vocabulary they have studied in the course;
- apply reading strategies and techniques;
- explain knowledge and basic concepts of the topic areas in Economics - Commerce such as
Brand, Travel, Change, Organization, Money and Advertising
7.2. Skills: Students will be able to:
- comprehend passages and demonstrate reading comprehension skills and techniques such as:
 identifying the topic, main ideas, and supporting details;
 skimming and scanning for the main idea and important details;
 focusing on key words to understand the main ideas of the passage;
 recognizing the outline of the passage;
 guessing meaning from context;
 taking notes important information and summarizing the main ideas;
- use dictionaries effectively;
- discuss and work in groups;
- develop presentation skills.
7.3. Attitude: Students will:
- be aware of the importance of reading skills in the development of language skills and
English competency;
- be aware of the importance of self-study.

At the end of the course, students are expected to achieve reading skills at level mid- B1 (CEFR).
Students are encouraged to take BEC Preliminary certificate for self-evaluation of their language
abilities.

8. Course Description:

The course consists of the first 6 units (unit 1-6) in Market Leader (Intermediate), 3 rd edition,
David Cotton, David Falvey & Simon Kent with a wide variety of areas, which lasts within 8
weeks or 30 periods of classwork. Session 8 is used for revision, consolidation and answering
questions, which focuses on main points of the course. The course book is based on The
Financial Times, one of the professional reference sources to ensure the variety as well as the
authenticity of the business content. Pre-reading, While-reading and Post-reading activities
should enable students to visualize concepts, identify main ideas, summarize or expand
vocabulary. The course will also include class discussion. Besides, students are prepared to do
some reading practice for international exams orientation.
9. Performance Requirements: In order to pass this subject, students are required to:
- attend class regularly;
- complete homework and class assignments;
- participate in class discussion and other activities.
