What Is Entrepreneurship Education?

Entrepreneurship education focuses on developing real-world skills that will
help students to lead exceptional lives in a rapidly changing world.
Entrepreneurship education teaches students crucial life skills, such as:

 How to collaborate and work with a team

 How to speak in public and prepare an effective presentation
 How to collect and analyze data
 How to use social media as an advocacy tool
 How to solve real, complex problems that don’t have a definitive answer
 How to use curiosity and creativity to find an innovative approach to difficult
problems

Students learn to understand the product development cycle, come up with their own
unique business proposals, and deliver multiple pitch presentations. This process
results in a superior college prep experience that serves our students long after
they've graduated high-school.

Entrepreneurship education does not just benefit those entering the fields of science,
technology, and business. Students of art, music, and humanities can develop their
imagination and learn how to apply creative thinking skills to real-world problems.

What’s New
Read an inspiring short story about an entrepreneur. Answer
the following question below: The next time you pass a vendor peddling goods on
the street, keep in mind that he or she can be supporting the next Alfredo M. Yao.

Alfredo M. Yao, Zest-O

When Alfredo lost his dad at age 12, his mother was left to support him and his
siblings by becoming a sidewalk vendor. A relative was able to give financial aid,
which allowed Alfredo to reach, but not complete, college at the Mapúa Institute of
Technology.

Alfredo took several odd jobs, which included time at a printing press. During his stay
there, Alfredo learned how to print cellophane wrappers for candies and biscuits. His
experience prompted him to start his own printing business.

His printing business was doing well. However, his discovery of the Doy Packaging
system from Europe was the turning point of his entrepreneurial career. He tried to
sell the system to juice manufacturers, but no one was interested. Thus, Alfredo
ventured into the juice business by concocting flavors in his kitchen.

These juices were not only delicious but also appealing to parents as they found the
light and brightly colored packs easy to include in their children’s lunch boxes. Best
of all, the packaging allowed the juice to stay chilled longer. Zest-O was born!

Today, Zest-O controls 80% of the juice market, and it has expanded to markets in
Australia, China, New Zealand, Korea, Singapore, US, and several countries in
Europe. Alfredo’s entrepreneurial success has revitalized the juice region in the
Philippines particularly farmers growing dalandan. The Doy packs are also recycled
by local cottage industries into handbags for export to other countries!

The boy who once faced the harsh realities of life now become a successful juice
manufacturer. Alfredo has diversified his business interests into airlines by acquiring
Asian Spirit Airlines and renaming it as Zest Air.

Alfredo is now literally on top of the world!

How does entrepreneurship education affects to an aspiring entrepreneur?

Entrepreneurship Education benefits every student by giving them an alternate

career path at any time in their lives.  In every graduating class, there are students
who want to go into business right away. There are some who will consider it after
college or several years of employment. Every student should have the opportunity
to make an informed decision about entrepreneurship as a career path now or later
in life. The foundation for that decision should begin in the k-12 system.

Entrepreneurship Education also provides a background for the teaching of

academic subjects giving those studies grounding in the real world. Entrepreneurship
can be the answer to such questions:

 “Why do I need to study this?” Math, science, writing and communication,

history, geography, even the arts can be connected to today’s world through a
connection to entrepreneurship.

 How will a scientist turn a discovery into income?

12
 How will an artist turn that talent into a family-supporting career? Every career
and technical student with a skill to sell in the market place should consider
the difference between finding a job and making their own job.

There are many pathways to entrepreneurial success and they are all accomplished
by innovative and creative thinking, not by rote memorization. Looking for the
alternative answer, the highly personalized answer, the innovative idea, keeps the
creative thinking muscles strong as students move through the K-12 system.

Rural and urban communities suffer from brain drain. Sharp, young people who are
forced to leave the area to find a good job and make a career. Students who do
leave their communities frequently want to come back at some point in their lives, but
alas, they can’t land a good job opportunity back home. Those same communities
have needs unmet by businesses in their area. Young people who are creative,
entrepreneurial thinkers can turn those unmet needs into business opportunities and
stay in or return to their communities, generating employment and enlarging the local
tax base.

Benefits of Entrepreneurship Education for Students

1. PREPARE STUDENTS FOR AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE.
We live in an age of unprecedented global and technological transformation. Today's
students face an uncertain future full of complex global, social, and environmental
issues. Therefore, we cannot predict exactly what our students will need to know
after they graduate. Entrepreneurship-focused programs teach students crucial life
skills that will help them navigate this uncertain future.
These skills include problem-solving, teamwork, empathy, as well as learning to
accept failure as a part of the growth process.
2. LEAVE ROOM FOR CREATIVITY AND COLLABORATION.
As standardized testing has become more common in public schools, opportunities
for students to innovate and collaborate with others have become more scarce.
Entrepreneurship education encourages creativity, innovation, and
collaboration. These attributes are highly valued by the top colleges in the
world and will serve your child well beyond middle school and high school.

3. TEACH PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION.
Students need to learn how to identify problems before they learn how to
solve them. Problem-solving has been taught in schools for decades — but
the same cannot be said for problem identification. Traditionally, problem-
solving is taught by presenting students with issues that are already clearly
defined by someone else.
In the real world, problems can only be solved when they have been properly
identified and described. Entrepreneurship education teaches children to
identify problems they have never encountered before — a skill that will be
very useful in tomorrow’s world.

4. MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE.
Entrepreneurs seek to solve problems, meet needs, and ease pain points
with the help of their products and services.
They are hard-wired to make a difference and make the world a better place.

13
By participating in entrepreneurship programs, students don’t just become ready to
create their own futures — they become ready to change the world.
