An outbreak of diarrhea occurred in July 2022 in Toril District, Davao City, Philippines, caused by food contaminated with the pathogen Vibrio cholera. At least six people died from the severe and potentially life-threatening effects. People who ate at food stalls in Rasay Street or the public market experienced symptoms. The food may have been contaminated during improper handling and preparation or from unsanitary conditions. To prevent foodborne illness, proper food safety practices such as safe food handling, proper cooking and refrigeration, and boiling water should be followed.

In July 2022, an outbreak of diarrhea happened in Toril District of Davao City,
Philippines due to food contamination caused by the foodborne microorganism with Vibrio cholera as the pathogen of concern. “Every one of them had nausea, vomiting, and massive diarrhea, and abdominal pain. And the character of the stool, it has a very pungent odor. Some with blood and mostly watery” Dr. Pilay, R. (2022, July 19). This situation can be severe or even life threatening just like what happened in Davao city where at least six people died. People who experienced food poisoning symptoms had episodes of eating and drinking at food stalls in Rasay Street in Toril, while others ate and drank at the district’s public market where the “food may have been contaminated during preparation and handling by infected handlers. It was also found that proper storage, delayed serving, and unsanitary environment may have contributed to the food contamination because of exposure to elements” Dr. Lopez, A (2022, July 19). To avoid being infected by foodborne disease, people must always practice safe food-handling practices, eat food that is properly cooked, refrigerate the leftovers quickly. When drinking water from open wells, boil it for 10 minutes before consumption. Once you experience the common symptoms of food poising, report it to your local health department immediately.
