SERVICE INFORMATION LETTER (S.I.L.)

S.I.L. N° 4.99
MAINTENANCE INTERVAL and EXTENSION PROCEDURE
FOR BATTERIES P/N 405CH and 505CH

REASON
This SIL presents the interval between maintenance and then the conditions, which have
to be respected to allow the increase of the interval between maintenance.

MAINTENANCE INTERVAL DESCRIPTION

Battery P/N 405CH is on board of the Airbus A330 and A340 aircraft.
Battery P/N 505CH is on board of the Airbus A340-500/600 aircraft.

These two batteries have a similar interval between maintenance.

At entry into service of Airbus A330, A340 and A340-500/600 aircraft, the initial interval
between maintenance was:
- Regular check (includes a periodical check) : every 2000 operating hours
- General overhaul : yearly

The first maintenance interval extension, increasing the interval between regular checks to
3000 operating hours, has been authorized following analysis of all data collected from
operators on their fleets.

In the Check chapter of their Component Maintenance Manual, the following maintenance
operations are indicated : Interval between maintenance.
- Regular check (includes a periodical check) : every 3000 operating hours
- General overhaul : yearly

NOTE: according to aircraft operation, the ratio between operating hours (aircraft
Power ON) and flying hours is generally in the 1.2 to 1.8 range for A330 and A340 aircraft
and equal to 1.2 for A340-500/600 aircraft.

MAINTENANCE INTERVAL EXTENSION PROCEDURE

The Airbus operator, which uses the battery P/N 405CH and/or the battery P/N 505CH
may be authorized to extend the interval between regular check beyond 3000 operating
hours if the following procedure and conditions are respected :
1) During a period of one full year the operator must collect on all the requested
data contained in the two attached forms : FORM1 and FORM2.
a) FORM1 : fleet data, global data on fleet (one form per month to be filled)
b) FORM2 : one data-sheet to be filled per battery checked in the battery shop
(must be the reflect of the data written in the log book)
n FORM2 in a month if n checks performed on batteries

2) After a period of one year the operator shall submit the complete data set to Saft
for the approval of their request for extension.

BENEFITS
1) longer interval between maintenance then lower Direct Maintenance Cost
2) less handling, lower work load in battery shop, lower spares stock
3) lower administrative cost (planning, report forms release and dispatch)

EFFECTIVITY
Holders of P/N 405CH unit : CMM 24 38 53 CMM on Airbus A330 and/or A340 aircraft
P/N 505CH unit : CMM 24 38 54 CMM on Airbus A340-500/600 aircraft
