PASSIVE SENTENCES

The passive sentences are often used in English. 1.- subject +active verb+direct complement+complements
They are used to focus on the action not on the doer. Someone stole the car while he was shopping
Direct complement+passive verb+complements

Past simple He was stolen the car while he was shopping

Past continuous 3.- subject+active verb+ sentence (S+V+C)
She was eating an apple……………………the apple was being eaten He thinks the doctor will come to the hospital soon.
Present perfect They thought the doctor had come to the hospital
She has eaten an apple………………………the apple has been eaten
Past perfect a) It + passive verb+sentence
She had eaten an apple…………………….the apple had been eaten It is thought that…………………………..
Will/will have eaten the apple will have been eaten It was thought that……………………………
She will eat an apple………………………….the apple will be eaten b) Subject of the clause+passive verb+ to- infinitive/to have
Going to +past participle
She is going to eat an apple…………………the apple is going to be eaten The doctor is thought to come…….
Modal verbs (can,must,should, may,….) The doctor was thought to have come….

She should have eaten an apple………… the apple should have been eaten
Causative use of get or have.
 There is a special structure in English which is somehow a kind of passive.
 We use this type of sentences when a professional person does some work for us, the structure is HAVE/GET+OBJECT+PAST PARTICIPLE
 The agent of the sentence doesn´t usually appear, only if the informations is really relevant to complete the sentence.

SUBJECT (the person that gets Verbs have or get OBJECT (the element that is PAST PARTICIPLE(what you do to
the action done) repaired, fixed.....) the object before.)

Susan had Her car repaired

Have, is having, had, was having, has had, had had, will have, is going to have, can have.......
Get, is getting, got, was getting, has got, had got, will get, is going to get, can get.........

Examples:
 Someone will check your eyes next week.............you will have your eyes checked.
 The gardener had planted her roses before.........she had had her roses planted.
