The unit requires students to apply the skills, knowledge and understanding
developed over the entire course, to complete a creative media production project. It
will provide students with a measure of self-directed learning, and an opportunity to
further clarify their longer-term goals through their choice of an activity to explore in
greater depth.

Name
Owen Balchin

Disciplines
(primary/secondary
) Writing / Video / Photography
(e.g. video,

etc)
Project (e.g. short

animation, - Advertising Campaign for a film (Both Physical and
documentary, advert, Digital)
branding, etc.) - “How the look of home media/posters have change
throughout the years” (Showing off how
covers/posters have changed throughout the years)
Section 1: Rationale (minimum of 100 words)

I have now been studying at college for around now four years. All the way from
UAL Level One to Level Three (Year Two). And in that time, I have done a lot of
different projects and from them I have learned a lot especially within Video (Such
as how to work a camera, how to film things properly, Editing with Adobe Premier
Pro) and Photography (How to work a camera, Composition, how to edit a photo in
Lightroom) as well as Designing with Adobe Photoshop.

One of my favourite projects I have worked on was our FMP (Final Major Project)
from Level Two. In this we had to pick from different genres and from there create
a film or TV show Idea and make some sort of imagery for it. I picked a Poster and
a DVD Cover. I had a lot of fun doing this project and not only that I got a good
grade from it too a Distinction. And I feel with this final project I need to explore
something more that I like so I hope from this I can expand my knowledge more for
this topic and hopefully learn about why a lot of things have changed too.

Section 2: Project Concept (minimum of 200 words)

Now the idea that I’m planning on doing is looking at how Posters and Home
media and how over time it has changed and also ask what do people really prefer
to have now from Physical Home Media (VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray) or Digital Home
Media (Netflix, Amazon, Disney Plus, etc)”.

To do this I’m going to have a page where you will see Posters and Home Media
covers that were big around that time and then along with that and also talking a
bit about the history I then show off my own Designs for posters and home media
of that time and compare them. Also showing them off also getting in survey
questions as well as some interviews from others about my own version.

I would like all of this to be shown off on a website page with some writing of what I
have found, pictures of different covers but also some other pictures, I’ll also add
in some videos put in of some interviews and such based on the part that I am
writing about on the page. And people will be able to read through it and watch
some of the interviews but also with the pictures have some like screenshots of a
survey I have done before.

Section 3: Evaluation – How you plan to record your progress (minimum of 100
words)

With my evaluation over this project I’d say that mainly I’ll have a look over my
daily reflection blog which is mainly in writing but also If I have been worked on
something visual then I will have to add in some pictures of them.
I can always do some videos I can put onto my site that when writing the
evaluation I can look back on and it will help me write out the evaluation. And also
can be just a nice little occasional update. I can also have some other people
come and check over the work and see what they think of it get some feedback
from it and then work that in from there. And with all of these It’ll be good to have
updates.

Section 4: Proposed Research Sources

With the different research source that have available the best thing that I can do
is to go through and have a look through a lot of different websites as for example
something like Wikipedia may not be the best source that I can find so I’ll have to
try and look at YouTube videos or things like company websites to try and get the
best possible view that I can.

This above is a Wikipedia page that talks about the history of the so called “war”
on DVD and Blue-ray and this will help in looking over and/or writing some
questions about what one do people prefer.

%20video,%2C%20commonly%20used%20with%20PAL).
All on the history of Blue-ray and help with writing out what the history is when we
get to blue-rays. Also helps with some other facts.

This website looks through the history and poster design’s and how throughout the
years it has changed. This will help a lot In writing up the history of it but also with
understanding how it has changed.

Section 5: Equipment Required

- Computer
- Phone
- Cameras
- Adobe Photoshop
- Adobe Premiere Pro
- Mics

Section 6: Resources Required

- VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray Covers

- Online Film Store Fronts (Netflix, Amazon, Disney Plus etc)
- Studio
- Company/Other Logos

Section 7: Skills to develop/learn

- Writing Skills
- Idea Making
- Editing Skills
- Plan some Marketing campaigns
- Photoshop Skills

Section 8: Personnel and responsibilities

Mainly it is going to be me doing a lot of the work with coming up with the idea and
the also it is me designing it and coming up with all that stuff that is needed for
this. I also have all the main plans of it all.

I may have some help from others for things such as interviews if I feel that it can
add more onto it. By asking what they feel about that medium that we’re talking
about or even just having

Section 9: Intended audience and context

With the intended audience of this project, I feel that they’re going to be a much
older group than I am. I’d say it will still appeal to young adults, but it will also aim
a lot higher age group. I feel it could appeal to all age groups as it shows off films
that are from the 80s or further.

One part of this project definitely is part of an advertising campaign as it shows off
posters and even things like DVD covers and even blue-ray and other forms of
media like it.

Section 10: Creative Mindsets

Ownership: Being able in future to always think about myself and always belive I what
Ideas I have in my head an just stick to it.

Critical Thinking: Particular to my daily blog and also other video updates or little notes I
wrote it is going back and trying to see where I have come up with the idea I question
Problem Solving: When it comes to a problem stopping me in whatever process of this I
need to trust I can find a way through the problem or even better having the strength to
ask one of my teachers for help on it.

Creativity: With designing my posters and other bits of media to always just let my
creativity flow and try many different things if possible and be afraid to try out new things.

Risk Taking: With my idea designing the posters and covers I’ve got to try and take a risk
with some of the things I add onto it

Collaboration: Whenever someone asks me to help out with work. That being a survey or
me just looking at their work and telling them what I think about it all and also what
changes I think should be made.

How to successfully complete a final major project

1. Do something you enjoy – look back on projects this year and think about
what skills you’ve learnt and which you have really enjoyed. What job would
you like to do in the future? How can you apply it to your project? Pick a
theme or themes which you can connect with.
LOVE YOUR PROJECT

2. Do lots and lots of research – primary and secondary are both essential.
Use a wide range of methods and resources, such as questionnaires,
surveys, interviews (Primary), and researching the work of professional
practitioners and techniques (Secondary).

3. Manage your time – Just think how fast this year has gone so far. Plan
ahead and don’t fall behind. MAKE USE OF INDEPENDENT STUDY TIME.

4. You must document everything what happens as you go along. Your entire
journey from start to finish should be fully recorded. Describe and analyse as
you go along. Every aspect of your project should be fully considered. Your
Planning and Schedule will be vital to the success of your FMP

5. Research, design, experiment, build, evaluate. Your project should evolve

over the allotted time. Be flexible and adaptable if your FMP decides to go in
a different direction than first intended. Ensure you record all developments as
the project develops.

6. Critically analyse and evaluate – this will refer to the research you
undertake, the pre-production, production and post-production. Don’t just
describe but analyse, interpret, research and evaluate.
7. Listen to advice from your lecturers in formative assessment sessions
throughout the project. You might just find that as we are used to marking
work, we know what the requirements are to make good/exceptional projects.
Remember, your work will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction, so aim
for the best grade you can and take advice on board when given.

8. You are being graded against SEVEN Learning Outcomes, so you need to
ensure that you do the very best in each of them to achieve the grade you
may require, so pay close attention to all parts of the FMP
