Techniques to establish
Coherence
Chronological Order
Logical Order
Emphatic Order
Chronological Order
It refers to organizing information in a text
or speech in a logical sequence based on
time or temporal order. In other words,
information is presented in the order in
which events occurred or in the order of
steps in a process.
Example:
"I woke up this morning and got dressed.
And then I brushed my teeth and had
breakfast. After breakfast, I walked to the
bus stop and waited for the bus to arrive.
When the bus arrived, I got on and rode it to
work."
Logical Order
Is when all of the messages and segments
within a group are in their logical sequence,
next to each other, in the position
determined by the physical position of the
first item belonging to the group.
Example:
Arrange the given words in a logical and meaningful order.
(a) 3, 4, 2, 5, 1 (b) 1, 3, 5, 2, 4
(c) 5, 3, 1, 4, 2 (d) 5, 3, 4, 2, 1
Solution: (c) From the given words, it is deduced that grass is eaten by
grasshopper, grasshopper is eaten by frog, frog is eaten by snake and
finally, eagle eats snake. So, the correct logical arrangement of words is
5, 3, 1, 4, 2.
Emphatic Order
This is when information found in a
paragraph is arranged to emphasize certain
points depending on the writers purpose.
The coherence of the paragraph is
established in one of two ways: (a) from
least to most important, or (b) from most to
least important.
Example:
"After looking at all the brochures and talking to several
salesmen, I decided to purchase an SLR camera. For
several years I had been dissatisfied with the results I was
getting from my point-and-shoot camera. The framing was
imprecise and the focus was not always accurate. I had
planned a vacation to an area that promised many
fabulous photo opportunities, and I wanted to capture each
one with accuracy. But the most important reason I
decided on the SLR camera was the great versatility it
offered."
THAT'S ALL!
