Key Concept Systems

Related Concepts Form, and Function

Statement of Inquiry The effects of nature have led humankind to develop scientific and technological systems that allow us to live
and work when we need or want to, and not be shaped by daylight hours.

Factual Question What are the different categories of lighting?

What are the parts that make a lighting system?

Conceptual Question Why are there so many different types of lighting?

What types of light source would be most suitable for my clients own light source?

Debatable Question Have our lives truly benefited from our ability to create artificial light when we want it, thus work when we want,
or should our lives be dictated by nature - work and play during daylight hours, sleep when it’s dark?

Statement of Inquiry
The effects of nature have led humankind to develop scientific and technological systems
that allow us to live and work when we need or want to, and not be shaped by daylight hours.
Design Situation

There are a vast array of lighting solutions on the market to fulfil the many
lighting needs vital to our lives, whether creating a mood in a room or
illuminating a cyclist to keep them safe at night.

For this project, you will need to identify a client or target audience and work
with them to develop a solution for a lighting problem they have.

Design Brief

In this unit, you are challenged to find a real client who has a lighting problem
and must create a lighting solution based on their requirements.

Your light, must:

- Focus on the problem of the client.

- Has a maximum size of: 300mm(w) x 300mm(l) x 300mm(h)

Strand 1: Explain and justify the need for a solution to a problem for a specified client/target audience
(This work should take approximately 3 hours to complete - 1-page MAXIMUM!)

‌why light is important

The target audience/problem

The solution

Light can be used for many different purposes from giving light to studying to help improve sleep. Light “helps our bodies produce Vitamin D, improves our
circadian rhythms and sleep patterns, helps us to focus, enables us to get more done, and even makes us happier”(Cantifix,2022). Light. Additionally, “light is
essential to our health and well being it regulates our sleep-wake cycle”(Signify,2022). Light is a needed source just like water and food.”Light allows us to see
the surrounding world by distinguishing details, individual colours, movement, and brightness. It has a very big impact on a human in terms of physiology and
psyche. But light also has extremely important functions about a lot of biological processes that occur in our body”(4nature). Without the use of light, there will
be lots of problems and difficulties to face when performing tasks. Some examples are without light if there is no light it will lead to no plants or trees and then
the difficulty in producing oxygen so many complications if there is no light
Some implicit ways of light are the colours of light that can be helpful for different purposes. For example, the colour red can help create a better sleeping
environment(BenQ, 2022) and the colour blue can help you “feel more alert and improve reaction time, focus, and productivity, according to research from
Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston”(Mirel Zaman,2018).

Jackson Macarthur is from Oklahoma He is 15 years old and he has just moved to Singapore in 2021(Jackson). He has had migraines ever since the age of
10. He got it because of genetics(Jackson). He gets them 1-2 times a month which means these attacks would be really painful when he gets them. Out of
ten, he said it hurts 9/10 which means it is very painful(Jackson). This can affect his lifestyle as having migraines can affect him with “hormonal, emotional,
physical, dietary, environmental and medicinal factors”(NHS,2019). He says that whenever he gets one he cannot do any work for the day meaning that if he
has a summative due on the next day, it will be challenging for him to complete it(Jackson). This can affect his grades which will make it difficult for him to get
a good overall grade. Migraines are a real problem especially for the brain as an article from WebMD says “Migraines can cause lesions, which are areas of
damage to the brain”(Webmd,2022). I have identified his problem from my interview with him and I see a design opportunity for creating a product to reduce
the times he gets migraines a month.

I created is this because approximately “14 % of the global population report migraines”(Emily, 2022). Which is approximately 1 billion 92 million people. My
target audience is those who suffer from migraines. The product I create should be easy to move around and aesthetically pleasing to do I will include what my
client says is aesthetically pleasing to him. The colour I chose will be green light because as per the technology network “green light exposure reduced the
number of headaches days per month by an average of about 60%”(Technology Networks, 2022). I will make sure the product is smooth to avoid any injuries
by using the sanding machine and or sandpaper. To make the green light I will use green laminated paper and place it on top of the light therefore when it
exits it will be green. This solution is a great solution as per technology networks “we measured the participant satisfaction when we enrolled people, we told
them they would have to return the light at the end of the study. But when it came to the end of the study, we offered them the option to keep the light, and 28
out of the 29 decided to keep the light"(Technology networks, 2022)

Teacher Formative Feedback (to be completed after self and peer assessment)
Great job on your work! Here are some suggestions for improvement:
1. Clarify the design challenge: While you mentioned the parameters for the design challenge, it would be helpful to explicitly state the design challenge
and its requirements at the beginning of your work to provide context for your reader.
2. Use headings: To help organize your work, consider using headings for each section, such as "Problem," "Target Audience," and "Solution." This will
make it easier for your reader to follow along and find specific information.
3. Provide more detail on the problem: While you did provide some background on Jackson's migraines, consider providing more detail on the effects of
migraines and how they impact his daily life. This will help your reader understand the importance of finding a solution to this problem.
4. Provide more resources: While you did provide a few sources, consider finding more research on the benefits of green light for migraines and other
lighting solutions for migraines. This will help strengthen your argument for your proposed solution.
5. Consider the manufacturing techniques: You mentioned using two manufacturing techniques, but did not specify what they would be. Adding this
information will help your reader understand the feasibility of your proposed solution.
6. Check for formatting and citation errors: Make sure to double-check your work for any formatting or citation errors, as these can impact the credibility
of your work.
Overall, you have done a good job identifying a lighting problem and proposing a solution. With some additional detail and resources, your work can be even
stronger.

Great job! Your research questions are well thought out and cover a broad range of themes.
However, I have a few suggestions to help you improve your research plan:
1. Consider adding more research questions that focus on the function and technical skills required for your product. While aesthetics and
environmental considerations are important, it is also crucial to ensure that your product works well and is technically sound.
2. It would be helpful to prioritize your research questions according to the level of importance of the project. You could do this by assigning a ranking or
weighting system to each question, or grouping them according to high, medium, and low priority.
3. Make sure that your SMART research questions are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. This will help you to focus your
research efforts and ensure that you are gathering data that is useful for your project.
Keep up the good work!

Teacher Formative Feedback (to be completed after self and peer assessment)
Great job on your analysis of the desk/task lights! You provided a detailed description of the parts, their purposes, and complexities. Your use of
subject-specific vocabulary is appropriate and shows your understanding of the lighting design.
To improve your work, you can consider adding more information about the usability of the products. For example, how easy or difficult is it to adjust the light
intensity or direction? How comfortable is it to handle the product? Additionally, you can provide more specific information about the materials used for each
part, such as the type of metal or wood.
Lastly, make sure to proofread your work for any grammatical or spelling errors. Overall, great job on your analysis!

Strand 4: Develop a detailed design brief, which summarizes the analysis of relevant research
(This work should take approximately 6 hours to complete including time to carry out research, which you will need to do for homework - 2 pages MAXIMUM!)

For this project, I am going to create a green light lamp that will be placed on a desk. This product is for those who suffer from migraines. What this product does is the green
light from the lamp can reduce migraines by 60% for the majority of those who suffer from migraines. Migraines are severe throbbing pain in only one side of the head. I have
recognized this problem from my friend Jackson Macthur also my client. Therefore I am creating a lamp that emits green light from it. An Article from technology networks said
“green light exposure reduced the number of headaches days per month by an average of about 60%. A majority of study participants – 86% of episodic migraine patients
and 63% of chronic migraine patients – reported a more than 50% reduction in headache days per month”(Technology networks, 2022). My product is aimed at those who
suffer from migraines in the age range of 5-85.As this is the age range of getting migraines. When a study was done Ibrahim ( a well-known neurologist in Arizona) in the
article from Technology works says, “we measured the participant satisfaction when we enrolled people, we told them they would have to return the light at the end of the
study. But when it came to the end of the study, we offered them the option to keep the light, and 28 out of the 29 decided to keep the light”.The product I will create will make
sure the number of migraines that occur monthly will reduce significantly. My product should be 6 inches tall and hand side as mentioned by my client. The product I am
creating will take influence from products that are already made such as the cup holder in my a3 inspiration or making my product foldable so it's easier to carry around. I am
going to include the holder pat like this photo below so it will be easier for my client to hold the product I will also include something like a cup stands here because my client’s
room is messy having a cup stand or a pencil stand here can help him become more organized.

The product I create needs to be lightweight around the range of 1-5 kg As this is what my client prefers. My product should be In a cubic shape as my client like his lamp to
be cubic (mentioned in the research finding table, 2022).I also need to make sure the product is not too big as it might not fit in the place he is putting the product.I need to
make sure the material i am using is durable such as ABS and polycarbonate(mentioned in the research finding table,2022) and it should have a base that is stable and will
not fall easily as if it falls it will cause a hassle . This is also because my client has younger siblings and if they accidentally break the lamp and it breaks there can be pieces
that might injure them, therefore, my product must be durable. If i need to make sure my product is durable and will not break I will need to find an efficient way to attach wood
which are pocket screws, dowels, biscuit joints and the Beadlock system(mentioned in the research finding table,2022)because if I use an inefficient way of attaching the
materials then i can break easily. If I use these ways to attach my product the chances of breaking will be reduced when it falls. At the same time, I need to take into
consideration the smoothness of the product because sharp edges can injure him or his siblings, therefore, I will use materials such as High-density polythene or
Low-intensity polyethene (mentioned in the research finding table,2022) as these materials are smooth and I can sand the edges easily. My client wants his product to be
simple and not include any design as he finds this aesthetic(mentioned in the research finding table,2022). I will also add green laminated paper on the lamp this will make the
light of my lamp green as the colour of the light will change depending on what the light hits on. I need to make sure I sand the parts where I include wood to avoid splinters
from occurring. To do this I can use sandpaper or I can use the sanding machine. When manufacturing this product i will utilise the tools that are in the design room such as
the laser cutter and vacuum former. But I should first know how to utilize these materials so I will look through a few videos and ask Mr.Dagher how to use to tools. When I am
making the product I need to consider the time and the material i am using because some machines might take a long time, therefore, i need to plan what I will do in each
lesson when I am creating the product. The materials I will use are going to be recycled materials that other people have used already.

- Technical Skills - Time - Resources - Environmental considerations

What advice would you give them to get to the next level?
Double check your grammar as some parts don’t make sense. And make sure your in-text citations are proper citations. Add citations for you images as
well. There is no information about technical skills, time, resource and environmental considerations. You could add about how long this may take to
manufacture, what materials you will use, what technical skills you may use and any environmental consideration you or your client may have.

Teacher Formative Feedback (to be completed after self and peer assessment)
Great job on your design brief! Here are some suggestions for improvement:
1. Provide more details about the specific features and functions of your product. For example, how will the green light be emitted? Will it have different
brightness settings? Will it be adjustable? Providing more specific details will help you create a more effective design.
2. Make sure to cite your sources consistently throughout your brief. You mention sources like Technology Networks and Ibrahim, but it's not always
clear which information is coming from which source.
3. Consider adding more information about the environmental considerations of your design. For example, will you use energy-efficient bulbs? Will you
use recycled materials in the manufacturing process?
4. It would be helpful to have a more detailed explanation of how you plan to apply your research findings to the design and creation of your lamp. For
example, how will you use the information about attaching wood to create a more durable product? How will you use the green laminated paper to
create the desired color of light?
Overall, your design brief is well-written and provides a good overview of your research and design plans. With a few tweaks, you can make it even
stronger!
