Summary

The article asserts that people in countries that are struggling with global
warming and most affected by heat and drought trying to stop desertification by
growing up new crops where it seems to be impossible.

According to the text we can use technologies to desalinate seawater and use it
in Irrigation system to grow up new crops. One of the commonly used technologies
named as reverse osmosis. That is a filtration system that uses a membrane to remove
ionic, organic and suspended solids from a water supply. Reverse osmosis is very
energy-efficient, but doesn’t work well on water with very high salinity. Another
system is known as NEMSD (nanophotonics-enabled solar membrane distillation).
Feature of this technology is that instead of heating the water before it comes into the
module, you heat it on the membrane surface itself, so it can be used anywhere
without additional infrastructure.

As a result, raised plants will help to enrich the soil with nutrients and moisture
and act as a barrier to desertification. The scientists who are implementing the project
hope that in a couple of years it will be possible to grow crops on these sites. Even
now, flowers and seedlings abound where there was a real desert.
