Introduction

Social Media is a great factor nowadays in a person’s daily life because

according to a study made by kepios there are 4.70 billion social media users
around the world in July 2022, equating to 59.0 percent of the total global
population. Social media user numbers have continued to grow over the past 12
months too, with 227 million new users joining social media since this time last
year.
A recent study shows that the number of teens who say they “use a social
networking site like Facebook” is still significantly higher than it is among adults;
81% of online teens say they use social networking sites such as Facebook, while
67% of all online adults use these sites. However, the gap is now only due to
adults ages 50 and older.
Social media is a big part of many teens’ lives. A 2018 Pew Research Center
survey of nearly 750 13- to 17-year-olds found that 45% are online almost
constantly and 97% use a social media platform, such as YouTube, Facebook,
Instagram or Snapchat.

So this study will focus on the effects of social media in a student’s

academic performance and progress in their respective areas.
Background of the Study

Social media are currently being used regularly by millions of people,

therefore, a lot of students use social media to their academic needs. Nowadays
students have demonstrated and consumed a lot of time using social media this is
because they spent time chatting and playing online instead of reading books and
socialize with their families and friends.
The increased use of Social Media has become a social norm and way of life
for people from all over the world.(Boyd 2007) In the past studies have found that
students are most likely who spend more time using social media demonstrated
poor academic performance in school.
The users now socialize through internet and affects our social interaction by
changing the way we interact face to face (Asur and Huberman 2010).Using social
media gives the impact to the Grade 12 HUMSS students of DIHS in learning and
studying properly sometimes some students misuse and overuse the social media
because they want to connect to other resources such as games, chatting and
sometimes sexual abuse towards their schoolmates which connects to the
learning progress and will have an impact to their academic grades or
performance.

This study will focus on the impact of social media to the academic
performance of all Grade 12 students of Dasmariñas Integrated High School .
Theoretical Framework

This study is supported by the Social Learning Theory by Albert Bandura

(1977) it refers to learning through social media settings, focusing on observation
as an important aspect of learning, that model the behavior of learners
accordingly.
Social learning theory examples in everyday life are common, with one of
the most evident being the behaviors of children, as they imitate family members,
friends, famous figures and even television characters. If a child perceives there is
a meaningful reward for such behavior, they will perform it at some point.
This theory means that a user will imitate or learn from famous characters
in social media, Below is the framework
Albert Bandura’s
theory suggests that a
person will learn from
the social media
whether it is good or
bad information

Then the student may

learn from using the
social media or not

CHAPTER II
Introduction
Social Media is the way how to interact among people which they create,
share or exchange information and idea in virtual communicating. There a lot of
people that far from their families, only the social media can connect them
virtually by using video call or call, posting on social media so there are ways to let
them know where you are. Social media has been using for selling or for looking
something that you can't find personally.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter presents the reviews and present synthesis of the Conceptual
Framework and Theoretical to fully understand the research problem and fill the
gaps in research and extend it further. This chapter aims to understand the
Impact of social media to the academic performance of G12 HUMSS Student’s.

1.SOCIAL MEDIA

Social Media is the way how to interact among people which they create, share or
exchange information and idea in virtual communicating. The social interaction
process and patterns of information sharing that can develop on Twitter have a
positive influence among student’s (Blight, Ruppel, Schoenbaver,2017). There a
lot of people that far from their families, only the social media can connect them
virtually by using video call or call, posting on social media so there are ways to let
them know where you are. Social media has been using for selling or for looking
something that you can’t find personally.

Several studies have been carried out by different researchers to assess how the
use of social media impact student academic performance because a lot of
students wants to spend their time not for academically use, but for their own.
Using social media for hours or soaking your eyes for hours from watching or
using cellphone can cause your eye blurry vision. As some of us didn’t even
believe that social media has its own negativity.

According to other studies, the negative impact mainly occurs when social
networking is used in the classroom. By using cellphone in School, the student
can’t even focus because of using social media or busy scrolling on Facebook and
other apps that paid their attention instead of learning or listening to their
teachers.

A social media marketing and popularity is still growing in our latest global social
media statistics research summary of 2022, 59% of the world’s population uses
social media. the average daily usage is 2 hours and 29 minutes as of July 2022
(David Chaffey 2022).

2.SOCIAL MEDIA SITES

2.1 GOOGLE
Google is one of the most popular social media sites in this day, SEO alone makes
it a must-use tool for any small business. Google was propelled on December 15
2011.
2.2 FACEBOOK
The largest social media network on the internet came in the existence on
February 4 2004, Facebook manage to collect 1.59 billion active users within 12
years. Facebook is one of the best communication site on internet now.

2.3 YOUTUBE
YouTube is the biggest and most well look video-based online networking site
established on February 14 2005 later on purchased by Google in November
2006.

2.4 TikTok
As of January in 2019 there are around 7.7 billion people in the world of which
3.397 billion were active social media users (Smith 2019). the fastest growing
social media network in 2021 was TikTok with 87.1% to growth measured (US
social network ozer growth 2021)

3.STUDENT’S PERFORMANCE
The WHO earlier in 2020 declared a global Covid-19 virus infection as a
pandemic because of this student’s are force to adopt online learning system and
latest technologies (Almaiah et al.,2020). Particularly it saves time to student’s,
saves cost and reduces spatial and temporal problems linked with physical
learning (Aldholay et al.2018). the results of the studies show that students
perform much better in online than the traditional learning (Henriksen et al 2020).
Likely because of having enough time to study the lesson given by the teachers
and easy access of related topics on the lesson using social media platform like
Google.
According to (Patricia,2020) because of this pandemic virus student’s feel stressed
because of online learning and prefer face to face learning, sometimes some of
them are facing mental health issues because of being stress to their school
works. Students now are very independent to aim higher grades and because of
that most students now are putting a lot of work on their modules, activities and
written works given by their teachers to have higher grades in the finals.
Academic success has been attributed student’s factors in the literature,
engaging students to define their learning and understanding to the school lesson
leads them to academic success. Several studies have shown that personal
behavior of the student’s is impactful on student’s academic success
(Hamoud,2018)

CHAPTER III
Research Method
In this study the method that is used is correlational, because the
researcher will find if there is a relationship between the usage of social media
and academic performance.

In this study, stratified simple sampling was used. The researcher randomly
selected students who uses the social media before giving them a questionnaire

represent the whole population.

Data Gathering Procedure

In this study the researchers had allotted time, effort and cooperation in
developing their questionnaire as to not offend the respondents the researchers
first consult the teachers of the respondents.
The data gathered from this research instrument were tallied and
computed for interpretation according to the answers of the respondents. Along
with the primary data, the researchers also made use of the secondary resources
in the form of respondents who did now want to participate in answering the
questionnaire to support the survey results.

Statistical Treatment

The following statistical procedures were used to interpret the data

gathered from the respondents study.
Slovin’s Formula. The sample size were analyzed using the slovin’s formula with
the following formula:

n=N ÷ ( 1+ N e )
2

n = Sample Size
N = Population
Ne² = Margin of Error
