Description
The L78 series of three-terminal positive regulators is available in TO-220,
TO-220FP, D²PAK and DPAK packages and several fixed output voltages, making it
useful in a wide range of applications.
These regulators can provide local on-card regulation, eliminating the distribution
problems associated with single point regulation. Each type embeds internal current
limiting, thermal shut-down and safe area protection, making it essentially
indestructible. If adequate heat sinking is provided, they can deliver over 1 A output
current. Although designed primarily as fixed voltage regulators, these devices can
be used with external components to obtain adjustable voltage and currents.

DESCRIPTION
TO-220 TO-220FP
The L7900 series of three-terminal negative
regulators is available in TO-220, TO-220FP,
TO-3 and D2PAK packages and several fixed
output voltages, making it useful in a wide range of
applications. These regulators can provide local
on-card regulation, eliminating the distribution
problems associated with single point regulation;
furthermore, having the same voltage option as
the L7800 positive standard series, they are
particularly suited for split power supplies. In
D2PAK TO-3
addition, the -5.2V is also available for ECL
system. If adequate heat sinking is provided, they
can deliver over 1.5A output current.
Although designed primarily as fixed voltage
regulators, these devices can be used with
external components to obtain adjustable voltages
and currents.

APPLICATIONS INFORMATION

Figure 1 : Fixed Output Regulator

NOTE:
1. To specify an output voltage, substitute voltage value for "XX".
2. Required for stability. For value given, capacitor must be solid tantalum. If aluminium electrolytics are used, at least ten times value should
be selected. C1 is required if regulator is located an appreciable distance from power supply filter.
3. To improve transient response. If large capacitors are used, a high current diode from input to output (1N4001 or similar) should be intro-
duced to protect the device from momentary input short circuit.

DESCRIPTION
The LM117/LM217/LM317 are monolithic
integrated circuit in TO-220, ISOWATT220, TO-3 TO-3 D2PAK
and D2PAK packages intended for use as
positive adjustable voltage regulators.
They are designed to supply more than 1.5A of
load current with an output voltage adjustable
over a 1.2 to 37V range.
The nominal output voltage is selected by means
of only a resistive divider, making the device
exceptionally easy to use and eliminating the
stocking of many fixed regulators.

DESCRIPTION
The LM137 series are adjustable 3-terminal nega-
tive voltage regulators capable of supplying in ex-
cess - 1.5A over a -1.2 to - 37V output voltage range.
They are exceptionally easy to use and require only TO-220
two external resistors to set the output voltage. Fur-
ther, both line and load regulation are better than
standard fixed regulators. Also, LM137 regulators
are supplied in standard transistor packages which
are easily mounted and handled. In addition to
higher performance than fixed regulators, the
LM137 series offer full overload protection available
only in integrated circuits. Included on the chip are
current limit, thermal overload protection and safe
area protection. All overload protection circuitry re-
mains fully functional even if the adjustment terminal TO-39
is disconnected.

• 15W for TO-220
• 20W for TO-3 Package
IO( max) is :
• 1.5A for TO-3 and TO-220
• 0.5A for TO-39
2. Regulation is measured at constant junction temperature, using pulse testing with a low duty cycle. Changes in out-
put voltage due to heating effects are covered under the specification for thermal regulation.

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
ADJUSTABLE NEGATIVE VOLTAGE REGULATOR

* C1 = 1µF solid tantalum or 10µF aluminium electrolytic required for stability.

* * C2 = 1µF solid tantalum is required only if regulator is more than 10cm from power supply filter capacitor.

ADJUSTABLE LAB VOLTAGE REGULATOR

* The 10µF capacitors are optimal to improve ripple rejection.
