Bayer announced its intention to acquire Monsanto in May
2016 and formally announced the deal for $128 per share
in September 2016. The deal corresponds to a total cost of
approximately $63 billion taking into account Monsanto’s debt.

Monsanto had mixed reputation amongst farmers. Even

though their Genetic advances helped farmers get bigger crops,
the lawsuits against the customers did damage the companies
reputation.
Bayer-Monsanto
Acquisition Bayer did not consider the ill reputation to be a problem as
people will be more invested in the genetic advances that
Monsanto brings up along with Bayers core values

Initial reports favored Bayer with positive response coming from

the farmers and retailers. Bayer was now the largest player in
global agriculture industry

Acquisition
Tilp said it believed Bayer deceived shareholders
about the risks of consumer lawsuits pending in the
US linked to the glyphosate-containing weedkiller

Monsanto's had first mover advantage in acquiring Climate

Digitization Climate's digital platform FieldView integrated and analyzed data from
several resources which helped farmers to improve productivity and
and profitability by making informed decisions.

Innovation- Data collected is made available to farmers on FieldView dashboard on

The Climate their computer, tablet or smartphone. The information
included regularly updated field maps, crop-
performance analyses, historical comparisons, real-time satellite imaging
Corporation of farm's operations.

Climate's private policy assured farmers that their data was

aggregated and remained in the farmer's control.

Farmers paid $ 299 for one FieldView Drive and $249 for each
additional Drive. They could use the baseline service , FieldView
Prime , for free, which provided weather information, simple
data visualization, field summary data

Now, farmers need not to extrapolate assumptions about the

Digitization entire field based on only 1% to 2% of the field, now they can
and look at every meter of the field and take decisions

Innovation- FieldView Platform uses feedback to learn and improve. It makes

The Climate recommendations based on data science but it also learns from
what actually happens in field when farmers implement its
Corporation proposals . Accordingly, system is refined over time.

Access to farmer's data is sensitive aspect of advancing digital

agriculture because farming culture is characterized by a proud
self reliance. Farmer's expertise is build through
years, generations of hard work and closeness to land.

Bayer Crop science has increased its R&D Budget from
1.2 billion to 2.3 billion in 2019 which was double to its
competitors.

They have 7300 researchers at 35 research facilities

and 175 breeding sites worldwide

Research and They digitized R&D operation using advance

computational tools like AI and machine learning to
Development analyze the internal research data.

Initially development in seed varieties took seven years

for understanding right traits

With the help of technology-CRISPR, it is possible to

create a hybrid with the right traits.
With the help of Fieldview, forecasting
demand and allocation of investment in
R&D is possible in production planning

Digitization was advanced in seeds and

breeding areas due to collaboration of
Research and Monsanto and Climate

Development In order to maximize yield, existing data is

used with the environmental data

Digitization helped reduce spending in other

segments such as hiring of data scientist
instead of plant breeders
