Coach
Jason Taylor
In ‘07-08, Taylor is entering his second season as head coach of the Trojans.
During his first year, he witnessed the growth and development of a young
team that consisted of 10 freshmen and only 2 seniors. Despite their youth,
the Trojans led the 11-team conference in defensive field-goal percentage,
was second in points allowed, and fourth in steals and turnovers caused.
By the end of the season, the Trojans were playing the toughest teams the
conference has to offer to last possession games. The Trojans took Barton
College, the eventual Division II national champions, to double overtime. They also played the other top three
teams in the league: Mt Olive, Limestone, and Queens down to the wire in the last two weeks of the regular sea-
son.
Taylor joined the Anderson staff in May ‘03 as assistant men’s basketball coach and head junior varsity coach. He
spent three seasons with head coach Doug Novak, Anderson University’s all-time winningest coach as a member
of NCAA Division II.
Two years before coming to Anderson, Taylor was the assistant basketball coach, adjunct professor of physical
education, and fitness center supervisor at Roane State (Tenn.) Community College in Harriman, Tenn.
Taylor earned an associate of science degree from Roane State in ‘99 and a B.S. degree in health and physical
education from Jacksonville State University in Alabama in ‘01.
He started his playing career at Aquinas College in Nashville, Tennessee. From Aquinas, Taylor transferred to
Roane State where he red-shirted in ‘97-98 before playing the ‘98-99 season.
As a redshirt sophomore at Roane State, he averaged 17 points per game. He was named the MVP of the Pensacola
Junior College Thanksgiving Classic, made the TJCAA All-Eastern Division team, and he led the TJCAA in 3-point
shooting making 96 of 208 from behind the arc.
Taylor signed to play at Jacksonville State in Alabama following the ‘99 season at Roane State. During the ‘99-00
season, Taylor was a member of the JSU Gamecocks first winning season since moving to Division I. That season,
the Gamecocks finished 17-11 which was good enough for a third-place finish in what was then the Trans American
Athletic Conference (TAAC) and is now the Atlantic Sun Conference.
During his playing career, Taylor played for some of the best coaches in the business. He played for TJCAA Hall
of Fame coach Charlie Anderson. He also played for Randy Nesbit, former Southern Conference Coach of the Year
at The Citadel. Taylor played one season under Mark Turgeon at JSU. Turgeon was the head coach at Wichita State
during their Sweet 16 run in the NCAA tournament in ‘05-06 and is now the head coach at Texas A&M.
Assistant
Coach
Jeff Brookman
Jeff Brookman joined the Anderson Uni-
versity basketball staff in July 2006.
Brookman, a native of Charlotte, N.C., has a career college coaching record of 2-0
posting wins against Longwood, while taking over for Dip Metress at Belmont
Abbey, and Liberty, while taking over for Byron Samuels at Radford University.
“We’re very fortunate to be able to add Jeff to our staff,” Taylor said. “He’s been
an assistant on several different levels, and he played and coached at Belmont
Abbey. He brings a lot of experience and is very good in the areas of recruiting,
player development and teaching.”
Brookman played at Belmont Abbey College from 1994-98. He was named the
Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Freshman of the Year after the ’94-95 season, honorable mention All-
Conference and was a two time team MVP.
Brookman scored 1,443 points in his career which puts him 14th on the all-time scoring list at Belmont Abby.
He also ranks second on the Belmont Abbey career list for 3-point field goals made with 266 and shot 40.5%
for his career from three.
After finishing his career at Belmont Abbey, Brookman played in the Switzerland Professional League from
’98-00. During the 1999-2000 season, he averaged 24.5 points per game, while shooting 58% from the three
point line playing for both Ruessbuhl and Viganello. Brookman started his coaching career in Switzerland
where he served as the head coach for the Sarnen Basketball Club, which consisted of six teams. The men’s
team ended the season with only 3 losses and moved from the 2nd League to the National 1st League, where it
stayed for the next two years.
He returned to Belmont Abbey for the 2001-02 season as an assistant coach for a team that ended the year 24-6,
won both the CVAC regular-season title and CVAC tournament title and reached the East Regional semi-finals.
From 2002-05, Brookman served on the staff at Radford University as an assistant coach. His duties there included
recruiting, player development, scouting and film exchange. During the 2002-03 season the Highlanders made it to
the Big South Championship game.
He returned to the Charlotte area in ’05 as an assistant coach for the ABA’s Charlotte Krunk. During his time
with the Krunk, Brookman had the opportunity to work with a number of great players, including George Leach
(Indiana), Ricky Clemmons (Missouri), Scooter Sherrill (NCSU) and Tony Harris (Tenn).
He left the Krunk in January ’06 to join the staff of the Charlotte Royals, a 17-and-under AAU team that sent
eight players onto the division I colleges.
Brookman was inducted into the Charlotte Catholic High School Sports Hall of Fame in February of 2007. He
graduated cum laude with a B.S. degree from Belmont Abbey College in 1997. He is currently persuing a Masters
degree from the United States Sports Academy in Sports Management. He resides in Anderson, SC.
