Ethics is what guides us to tell the truth, keep our promises, or even help someone in need. Ethics is
important in entrepreneurship as it regulates the behavior of people. It also provides guidelines for
people to avoid mistakes, while they are thinking that they are doing the right thing. In the given case
problem below, Is there anything wrong with the actions of the three personalities? Elaborate your
answer.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES: What Am I Living For?

"Everyone shall have the right to freedom of expression."

According to Article 10 of the Human Rights Act, everyone has the right to freedom of expression. This
right shall include freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without
interference by public authority and regardless of frontiers. Given this law to 'freedom of expression,' I
shall say that Mr. Quimno wasn't doing the right thing not when he opposed with the proposal of Dr.
Malu-ay but when he personally convinced the other member of the board to do the same. He literally
interfered with the decision and personal views of other members of the board. He's known to be a
prominent citizen due to being a successful businessman and a president of civic organisation, and these
achievements of him are enough to convince an ordinary person.

On the other hand, I believe Dr. Venj Malu-ay's proposal has a purpose and could actually create a
positive impact in community college. Because the advantages of increasing tuition according to Kristine
Tucker(2018) is that it provide funds for colleges to make quality improvements and undergo building
projects. Through this, schools say they can also hire additional professional staff to meet students'
administrative needs. And that is the competitive edge of rising tuition costs, because not only does it
improves but also allow colleges to stay competitive in the industry. For instance, in Tagoloan
Community College, there is really a need for technology improvement, such as computers, technical
equipment, classroom visual aids, and specially the internet services and many more.

Well, for me, when it comes to education, money is not always a burden. I know that our country is one
of the most poor countries around the world, but I guess it's the rightful time for us to really invest in
education as it's our only hope if we really seek progress. And these learners need help on that. Yet we
have scholarship programmes and many other government financial aid, don't we? Therefore, I would
agree on Dr. Malu-ay's proposal.

But there's something wrong when Dr. Malu-ay befriended Mrs. Jaermaine Quimno just for the sake of
his pride – of not accepting defeat. Although Mr. Quimno has done unethical behaviour upon urging the
other members of the board to oppose with him, the voting has already done and majority of the
opposition have agreed to Mr. Quimno too. The point is, Dr. Venj Malu-ay should understand the
'majority rule' according to Wikipedia. It is the principle that says "the group that has the most
supporters gets its way" when it comes to voting. The Philippines is a democratic country thus the
'majority rule' is applicable in here, and therefore it must be followed. Besides, according to Kenneth
May, majority rule is the only "fair" decision rule. However, Dr. Malu-ay disobeyed that rule.
In conclusion to these statements, I realised that all three personalities are somehow wrong not for the
decisions they've made but for the actions they've done. Their intentions are for good however it kind of
more personal, especially the Quimno couple's. But I also realised something great upon doing this case
problem; that all of us exist for a reason – and that would be to be a help for others. That is what I am
living for...
