GOOD QUALITY SAMPLE
+ Ensure that the baby is well-fed prior to collecting blood sample.
« Prior to specimen collection, apply gentle massage on the baby’s leg
or apply warm compress to the foot.
+ Make sure the two punctures made on the baby’s foot are close to
one another to encourage pooling of blood.
+ When squeezing baby's foot to promote blood flow, do not forget to
Telease baby’s foot from the squeeze to encourage capillary refill.
+ Only apply specimen onto the filter paper when sufficient blood has
pooled on the puncture site (see picture above).
+ Collect at least four (4) large blood drops that fully saturates up wi)

Tips to avoid it:

(1) Not wiping alcohol from puncture site before making skin puncture.
(2)Allowing filter paper to come in contact with alcohol, formula,
antiseptic solutions, water, etc., either before or after blood specimen

Tips to avoid its
( V Ensure that the alcohol placed on the puncture site is already dry before
pricking. Keep all unnecessary liquids away from the sample collection
and drying areas to avoid contamination due to spillage of liquids.CONTAMINATED SAMPLE:

Not safely securing the NBS sample during drying such that vectors
such as flies or other insects become attracted to the blood on the
filter paper and leave contaminating markings.
Tips to avoid it:

Rodents are highly attracted to the dried blood on the filter paper and
will readily eat it when they can.
Tips to avoid it:
(1) During drying of sample, ensure to keep the sample in a safe, secure place.

is securely packed first with clean paper, then with a cellophane wrapper prior to
