practicing new skills #1 - Is one of the most challenging reading strategies for students to master. Simply
because it requires students’ multiple skills and strategies together.
- When students synthesize, they are aware of how their thinking changes and evolve
as they read a text. It is important that students learn to synthesize to form new
ideas and opinions.

Let Us Discover

The key to a good synthesis is to be organized as you’re researching and reading sources on
your topic. Take a look at these steps:
1. Choose a topic. It could be a person, place, character, event or an idea. This is
where your essay/article will evolve in.
Example: Activities of Barangay Pag-Asa during Pandemic
2. Research information from reliable sources about the topic. Identify the thesis or
main point(s) of each reading.
Example: Justine Delacruz (2020) stated that Bayan Bayanihan, based on the traditional
Filipino “Bayanihan” principle of community spirit, addresses the health crisis caused by
COVID-19 by delivering critical food supplies toasmanyas2, 252 vulnerable households.

relationship then analyze their relationship or how they relate to each other.
4. Construct a paragraph through combing all the gathered information an idea about a
certain topic from different sources and give highlights where you can draw
conclusion.
Example: a. The problem with food and health care provision were increased because of this
year-long pandemic. According to Justine Delacruz (2020), Bayan Bayanihan, based on the
traditional Filipino Bayanihan principle of community spirit, it helps the health crisis caused by
COVID-19 by delivering essential food supplies to as many as 2, 252 affected households.
Moreover, Martin Belayo (2020) also mentioned that Purok officers led the food distribution
schedules, and worked with the DSWD to identify the neediest communities to distribute and
pack the goods. Each family will receive 35 cans of sardines, tuna flakes, corned beef, and
other items. Therefore, the community leaders are giving their outermost help to support
families especially the poorest to be able to survive this pandemic.
