FOREST STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL

The Mark of Responsible Forestry

DESIGN PROPOSAL for FSC’s Expo Booth for the

U.S. Green Building Council’s 2012 Conference & Expo
By Jillian Gaviani
DESIGN CONCEPT:
A “nest”-inspired booth reflects nature’s innovativeness. The nest represents how
species in nature build their habitat or shelter without disrupting the earth’s ecosystems.
Building a home of spare parts keeps the balance of nature and a self-sustaining system.

In
nitial concept sketch

“Nature’s innovations rely on spare parts. Evolution advances by taking available

resources and cobbling them together to create new uses.”
-Steven Johnson, Where Good Ideas Come From
Below is a model of my proposed booth design.
Three separate components create the sense of a
whole and provide refuge from the rest of the expo.
To the left is the plan, showing informational panels,
as well as some featured FSC certified furniture and
light fixtures.
Sketch of final design-
The booth will consist of three
components made of long, thin strips
of wood veneer. Strips would be
interwoven to create softly arching,
organic forms. The light natural color of
Tanoak will evoke a lightness, whereas a
darker wood may read too heavy.

of cardboard scraps from
Seattle-based designers,
GrayPants.

South Elevation
The arching, nest-like structure invites
you into the booth. Tall, information-
al panels are placed throughout the
booth to enclose the space and direct
you to different areas to learn more
about the FSC and their mission. A hint
of red stands apart from the natural
wood tones surrounding and grabs the
visitor’s attention.

East Elevation

The tall, frawn-like structure adds height

and softly arches over to create a sense
of enclosure. Sustainable pendant lights
hang from above to bring the scale down
to a more intimate level and create a cozy,
nuturing environment within the nest-like
booth.

North Elevation
The larger, curved enclosure creates a
seating space for visitors to talk with
FSC representatives or just relax for a
moment and enjoy a quick escape.

Made of three separate components,

the booth will be able to be stored away
for next year and easily reconfigured for
whatever the space.

West Elevation
Furniture featured here is from Seattle design
team, Gray Pants, who create products made
from the scraps and leftovers of other projects.
Both chairs here are made of FSC certified wood.

This new design for the FSC booth is

unexpected and will set itself apart from
the rest of the conventional booths at the
expo. It highlights wood used in a new,
contemporary way, yet referencing the most
elementary and basic construction using
wood, that of the bird’s nest. It is disruptive
in that it will grab your attention and draw
you in. This shelter will provide refuge from
the rest of the convention.
