Problems

1. In a class experiment, Miguel rolls one ordinary 6-sided die repeatedly. Keeping track of each number
he rolls, he decides to stop as soon as one number is rolled three times. Miguel stops after the 12th roll,
and the sum of these rolls is 47. Which number occurred for the third time? (An ordinary 6-sided die
has the numbers from 1 through 6 on its sides)

Trial and Error:

If the number is 6... this would equate to: 6 x 3 = 18

[ 47 - 18 = 29 ]... 29 is the remaining amount in which four (4) numbers from 1-5 must be rolled twice and
one (1) number must be rolled only once.

5 x 2 = 10
4x2=8
= 28
3x2=6
2x2=4
29 – 28 = 1; hence, 1 is the number rolled only once

This indicates that 6 is the number rolled thrice.

2. How many squares of all sizes are there on a standard 8-square by 8-square checkerboard?

To get the sum of all the squares in a 8x8 square checkerboard, one must first get the amount of squares
per individual number of columns and rows.

1x1 = 1 square
2x2 = 4 squares
3x3 = 9 squares
4x4 = 16 squares
= 204 squares in total
5x5 = 25 squares
6x6 = 36 squares
7x7 = 49 squares
8x8 = 64 squares

This means that a total of 204 squares are in a standard 8x8 checkerboard.

3. How many toothpicks will be needed to make a 7 × 7 square?

To make a 7x7 square, you need 8 lines for columns and 8 lines for rows, 16 horizontal and vertical lines
in total. To get the number of toothpicks in a 7x7 square, you just need to multiply 16 with the number of
squares per row/column which is 7.

7 x 16 = 112

The number of toothpicks you need for a 7x7 square is 112 toothpicks.
