Subject Biology
Week 3
Date 17 January 2022
Day Monday
Time 8:00-8:40
Duration 40 minutes

Theme Theme 1 : Fundamental of Biology

Title 3.0 Movement of Substances Across a Plasma Membrane

Content standard 3.2 Concept of Movement of Substances Across a Plasma

Membrane

Learning At the end of teaching and learning, students are able to :

Standard 3.2.1 State the characteristics of substances that are able to
move across a plasma membrane in these aspects:
● Size of molecules
● Polarity of molecules
● Ionic charge
3.2.2 Conduct of experiments to study the movement of
substances across a selectively permeable membrane by using
● Visking tube
● Simple osmometer
3.2.3 Describe by using examples movement of substances
across a plasma membrane
● Passive transport
● Active transport
3.2.4 Compare and contrast passive transport and active
transport
SUCCESS CRITERIA Students are able to :
✧ Identify the characteristics of substances that are able to
move across the plasma membrane
✧ Conduct experiment using visking tube or simple
osmometer to study the movement of substances across
a selectively permeable membrane
✧ Explain the role of passive transport and active transport
on plasma membrane
✧ Compare passive transport and active transport
21st Century Cooperative Learning
Teaching and
Learning Strategy
Cognitive Level C1&C2: Remembering and Understanding
(Remember by labeling the active transport and passive
transport on plasma membrane)
C4: Analyzing
(Analyze the type of substances that are able to move across
the plasma membrane via active transport or passive
transport)
C5: Evaluating
(Evaluate students performances in simple quiz, discussion
and quiz)
C6: Creating
(Relate the movement of substances across plasma
membrane to daily life)

5E Model ENGAGE : Students are engaged with a challenging situation,

prior knowledge is activated, questions are provoked.
EXPLORE : Students investigate the phenomenon, prior
knowledge is challenged, ideas are created.
EXPLAIN : Students explain the phenomenon, new knowledge
is gained and applied.
ELABORATION : Students apply their knowledge towards new
situations, knowledge is deepened and extended.
EVALUATE : Students reflect on their knowledge and the
learning process, assessment

INDUCTION SET (5 MINUTES)

Engage (5 minutes)
✧ The teacher starts the class by asking students several questions
about the previous lesson.
✧ Students give some feedback and opinions on the previous
lesson.
✧ Teacher will briefly talk about the lesson plan of today's lesson to
prepare students for the lesson
✧ Teacher will throw some questions to arouse students’ interest to
learn the lesson. (Imagine bringing a box of korea fried chicken in
a classroom what will happen? Why everybody can smell it?)

LEARNING PROCESS (35 MINUTES)

12.3 Concept of Movement of Substances Across a Plasma
Membrane

EXPLORATION (10 minutes)

✧ Students will be divided into small groups to discuss the
experiment.
✧ Students will further enhance the concept by using simulation.
d2e:lx_simulation:1)
✧ Students will read the material and discuss their findings with
group members. (https://www.khanacademy.org/test-
prep/mcat/cells/transport-across-a-cell-membrane/a/passive-
transport-and-active-transport-across-a-cell-membrane-article)

EXPLANATION (10 minutes)

✧ During the discussion among students, teacher will check their
progress from time to time and teacher will give hints to students
when they face problems.
✧ Students will need to complete a table regarding different types
of transport
✧ Students will try to explain again the situation of bringing food
into the classroom during engagement session by using the
scientific terms they learnt in activities
✧ Teacher will listen and respond to the answer given by students
and introduce students with the correct terms and concepts.

ELABORATION: (10 minutes)

✧ Students will be divided into small groups to discuss the concept
of movement of substances across a plasma membrane in daily
life. (Preservation of food, Feeling of thirsty after eating salty
food, Use of salt to kill slugs or snails, Reason for fingers to get
wrinkly)
