21st Century Genres

Narrative
A narrative is literature that tells a story, from
the point of view of the narrator. There is
generally a single event, or a sequence of
connected events, with characters, setting,
and plot.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse can be


considered a narrative genre because it tells a
story using a particular structure and
conventions that are commonly associated
with storytelling. The movie follows the
journey of the main character, Miles Morales,
as he discovers his powers and learns to
become a superhero.
Chick Lit
Chick Lit refers to works that are written by
young female writers, about contemporary
women's life and struggles, with young
women as·the target readers.

In "Easy A," the main character, Olive, is a high


school student who becomes the subject of
rumors and gossip about her sexual
experiences. This leads to various
misunderstandings and complications in her
relationships with friends and classmates.
These themes are commonly found in chick lit
stories, which often explore the complexities
of relationships, love, and growing up.
Digi-Fiction
Digi-fiction, also known as digital fiction, is a
genre of literature that combines traditional
storytelling with digital technology. Digi-fiction
works are created to be experienced on
electronic devices such as computers,
smartphones, and tablets, and often
incorporate multimedia elements such as
graphics, audio, and video.

The Matrix is considered to be a digi-fiction


genre film because it incorporates digital
technology and special effects in a way that
enhances the storytelling and creates an
immersive and visually stunning experience
for the audience. It combines traditional
narrative elements with innovative technology
to create a genre-defying work of art.
Flash Fiction
Flash fiction is a genre of fiction that is
characterized by extremely short stories,
typically no more than 1,000 words in length.
These stories are often highly compressed,
relying on sparse language and suggestive
imagery to convey their meanings. Flash
fiction can take many different forms, from
traditional narrative fiction to experimental
and avant-garde writing.

The Lottery is considered to be a flash fiction


genre story because it is a short work of fiction
that is both concise and impactful, using
suggestion and implication to convey its
powerful message.
6-word Flash Fiction
6-word flash fiction is a subgenre of flash
fiction that challenges writers to tell a
complete story using only six words. It
requires writers to be extremely concise and
precise in their use of language, carefully
choosing each word to create a vivid and
memorable narrative.

example of 6-word flash fiction because it is a
very short story consisting of only six words,
yet it is able to convey a powerful message
and evoke strong emotions in the reader.
Graphic Novels
A graphic novel is a type of book that tells a
story through a combination of words and
images. Unlike traditional novels, which rely
primarily on written text to convey their
stories, graphic novels make extensive use of
illustrations, often in the form of sequential
art, to depict characters, settings, and events.

"Watchmen" is a graphic novel because it uses


a combination of words and images to tell a
story, similar to other works of this medium.
The graphic novel is a specific type of book
that often contains more complex storytelling
than a traditional comic book.
Manga
Manga is a type of Japanese comic book or
graphic novel that is popular both in Japan and
around the world. Manga is typically published
in black and white, and is read from right to
left rather than from left to right like
traditional Western comics.

"Demon Slayer" is a manga because it is a


Japanese comic book series that was created
and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotouge. It was
originally serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump, a
popular Japanese manga magazine, from 2016
to 2020, and has been collected into 23
volumes as of 2021.
Doodle Fiction
This genre consists of cartoon doodles with
handwritten graphics place of traditional font.
Since it has drawings, it enhances the story
and often adding humorous elements.

"Diary of a Wimpy Kid" can be considered a


doodle fiction because it includes a significant
number of illustrations and hand-drawn
elements in addition to its written narrative.
The series is written and illustrated by Jeff
Kinney, who uses a distinctive cartoon style to
depict the story's characters and events.
Hyper Poetry
"Hyper poetry" is a term that can refer to
several different types of poetry that
incorporate digital or multimedia elements. It
often involves using technology to enhance
the traditional form of poetry by adding
interactive or multimedia elements such as
sound, video, animation, or hypertext links.

"The Dreamlife of Letters" is considered a


hyper poetry genre because it is a hypertext
poem that incorporates digital and interactive
elements. The poem takes the form of a web-
based interface where users can click on
individual letters to reveal related words and
phrases. The poem is not presented in a linear
or sequential format, but rather as a non-
linear web of interconnected words and
images.
Text Tula
Text tula is a group ogf words that uses mobile
gadgets. It is also more like a tanaga. It consist
four lines and seven syllables, and every
ending of lines has a rhyme word.

This is called Text Tula because it is a message


using a mobile gadget.

Text Talk
"Text talk" is a style of writing that imitates
the way people communicate through text
messages or other forms of instant messaging.

This is a Text Talk because they are imitating


what they’re meant to be communicating
through a text messages.
Young Adult
The Young Adult (YA) genre is a category of
literature that targets teenage readers. It
typically features coming-of-age stories that
explore the struggles and challenges faced by
young people as they navigate through
adolescence and begin to discover their
identity and place in the world.

The Hunger Games is classified as a Young


Adult (YA) genre because it was written
specifically for a teenage audience. The novel
features a teenage protagonist, Katniss
Everdeen, and explores themes that are
relevant to young adults, such as identity,
love, family, and the struggle for self-
discovery.
Speculative Fiction
Speculative fiction is a broad genre that
encompasses works of fiction that explore
worlds and concepts that are not based on the
real world or are not yet possible with current
technology or scientific understanding. It
includes various sub-genres such as science
fiction, fantasy, horror, and alternative history.

The Lord of the Rings is classified as a


Speculative Fiction genre because it is set in a
fictional world that is vastly different from our
own. The story takes place in a universe called
Middle-earth, which is inhabited by various
races, including humans, elves, dwarves, and
hobbits. Middle-earth has its own geography,
history, mythology, and languages that were
created by the author, J.R.R. Tolkien.
Sci-Fi
Science fiction, often abbreviated as sci-fi, is a
genre of literature that explores the impact of
technology, science, and other futuristic or
speculative concepts on society and
individuals. Science fiction stories often
imagine alternative worlds, universes, or
timelines, and typically involve a mix of
scientific and technological concepts that are
not currently possible or do not yet exist.

Jurassic World explores themes such as the


consequences of playing with nature and the
limits of scientific progress, which are
common themes in sci-fi. Overall, the
combination of advanced biotechnology,
futuristic setting, and exploration of
philosophical themes make Jurassic World a
sci-fi film.
Creative Non-Fiction Blog
A creative non-fiction blog is a platform where
writers can share true stories, personal
experiences, and real-life events using literary
techniques more commonly associated with
fiction. Creative non-fiction is a genre that
incorporates storytelling and narrative
techniques to recount real-life events in a
compelling and engaging way. It can take
many forms, including personal essays,
memoirs, travel writing, and more.

The Sun Magazine is a publication that


primarily focuses on publishing creative non-
fiction works such as personal essays,
memoirs, and interviews that explore the
human experience. The magazine features
stories that are based on real-life events,
experiences, and emotions, and the writers
use literary techniques such as storytelling and
narrative devices to create compelling and
engaging pieces.
