(EXPLORE) Activity A: Reflection of light

What you need:

➢ small mirror
➢ a pair of scissors
➢ book/magazine

Things you will do:

1. Cut out magazine pictures that have symmetry into halves that
perfectly mirror each other.
a. stars
b. butterfly
c. flower
2. Put the mirror next to the half and see its reflection to complete the
picture. See illustration A. (Be careful in handling the mirror.)
3. Hold up a printed copy of a text from a book or magazine to your
mirror. (See illustration B)

Guide Questions:

1. What did you observe when you placed the halves of the cut-outs
beside the mirror?

2. Can you do this with the other cut-outs that are not symmetrical?

3. What will happen when you cut the picture crosswise instead of
lengthwise, and place them beside a mirror?

4. What is different about a printed text in the mirror?

Activity B: Refraction of Light
What you need:
➢ pencil
➢ transparent glass
➢ water

Things you will do:

1. Get a glass half-filled with water.
2. Put a pencil in the glass of water. Look at the pencil through the
water.
3. View the pencil at the top of the glass. What happens to the pencil?
4. View the pencil from the side of the glass. What happens to the
pencil?
5. Record your observation in your Science notebook.

Guide Questions:
1. What did you notice to the appearance of the pencil when you put it
in a glass of water?
2. What is the appearance of the pencil when you viewed it from the
side?
3. What do your observations show about the way light travels through
different media?

(EXPLAIN)
Light is a type of energy that moves in waves. It always travels in a
straight line. It moves very fast. Light will always move in a straight line
unless something blocks it.
Reflection is when light bounces off an object. When this happens, it
allows us to see the object. A picture of the object is sent to the brain
from the eye. Our brain helps us understand what we see.
To further demonstrate that light is reflected, use a small bouncing ball.
Throw the ball at the chalkboard in a straight line in front of you. The
ball will bounce off to the board back in a straight line to you. Next,
throw the ball at the chalkboard at an angle. The ball will bounce away
from the board at the same angle. But in opposite directions. Explain
that light travels in the same manner.

Illustration for ball bouncing in a straight line

The way light bounces back is very much similar to the way a ball
bounces back on hard smooth surface. When you throw a ball straight
down, it will bounce straight back at you. When you throw a ball at an
angle, it will bounce off at the same angle away from you. Light reflects
the same way off a mirror. Light bounces off at the same angle that it
struck the mirror.
F. Discussing new Activity 1
concepts and
practicing new Study the pictures below. Write True if light reflects on the following
skills #2 objects and write False if not.
(ELABORATE)

G. Developing Refraction is the bending of light as it travels from one type of material
mastery to another like from air to water.
(Leads to formative
assessment)

https://www.google.com/search?q=refraction+of+light
As you look at the pencil, the top part of the pencil came directly to your
eyes light rays from the bottom part passed first through the surface
between the water and the air.
When part of the pencil was submerged in the water, it looked bent.
The pencil appears bent due to the property of light called refraction. It
happens because the light ray slows down and changes direction as it
passes into the water.
Activity 2
Write reflect or refract for the following objects.
