Lesson Class #: Contemporary dance Course Grade 9 Dance

Title/Focus introduction

PROGRAM OF STUDY OUTCOMES

In modern:
● Demonstrate basic positions of the feet (turned out and parallel)
● Identify and explore the following force qualities: roll, swing, collapse

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson students will be able to:


1. Demonstrate the basic positions of modern positions of the feet (turned out vs parallel-
in 1st and 2nd)
2. Perform with accuracy a leg swing beginning from a standing position
3. Explain the mechanics of a contemporary contract or collapse

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

● Laptop
● Pre set playlist
● Dance room

PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

● Prepare enough music for the 60 minute block


● Have adaptive exercises for students who require additional support
● Use timer on apple watch to ensure time is not exceeded (60 minutes of dance, leave 5
minutes on each end)
● Prepare knowledge questions to assess student understanding during the block

PROCEDURE

Introduction Time

● Students have 5 minutes to change at the start of the class (begin at 1:40) 8 min
● Have students spread out and find their own space
● Review expectations for the week of what clothes they should be
wearing
● Hook question: what words do we think of when we discuss the style of
contemporary dance? (fluidity, connection)

Body Time

Topic 1) Have music queued up and ready to go for center 15 min


Center warmup stretch and warm up
2) Work through the positions of the feet, parallel
and turned out 1st and 2nd
- This is the time to ensure our understanding
of these positions
- Most of the time we will be working in
parallel (right under the hips)
3) Take time to work through neck, back and
shoulder stretches

Topic 1) Introduce the roll down routine they will be 15 min


Leg swings and using for the next 2 weeks, work through the first
roll downs 1.5 minutes of the song and teach the skills
incorporated
2) Guide students through the leg swing, and tech
the form of

both of the ideas listed above

Topic 1) Have students make 5 lines to travel across the 20 min

either be counted in or instructed to begin based
on a set amount of counts (every 8 or 16)
2) Work through the exercise 4 times each and stop
after each ATF section to give corrections and
feedback
- Rolls (loosen and push through ground)
- Roll down with roll
- Roll down with leg swing
- Floor slides
- Lunge with rolls

Conclusion Time

● Ask students: Why do we think contemporary was created? 5 min


● Reiterate what students should wear for the next 2 weeks
● Share that attendance is a way that determines there summative grade

Assessment

● Observations: See which students are putting effort into their movements and how they
are progressing
● Use attendance sheet to monitor who is missing/ coming to class

Music: All music is prepared ahead of time and is appropriate for school and is on a playlist on
apple music
