Lesson Plan On Defined and Undefined Terms
Lesson Plan On Defined and Undefined Terms
In Mathematics 8
I. Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
1. illustrate the need for an axiomatic structure of a mathematical system in general, and in
Geometry in particular: (a) defined terms; (b) undefined terms; (c) postulates; and (d) theorems.
(M8GE-IIIa-c-1)
Specifically:
A. Subject Matter
B. Learning Concepts
The three undefined terms are the point, line and plane.
The most common defined terms are the segment and ray.
C. Learning Process
D. Materials
E. References

B.Presentation
Define Geometry.
Geometry- is a branch of Mathematics that deals with the properties of space. It is a science that helps us
understand shapes and its relationship to the real world.
- geo (Earth), metron (Meausure)
POINT
A dot suggests the idea of one of the basic undefined terms in Geometry which is the point.
-the most important concept in Geometry no matter how insignificant it may be.
-no geometrical figure can be drawn without beginning with a point.
- We cannot define a point. We can just describe it.
LINE
Questions: Do you know what is in the screen? (A constellation: Big Dipper)
What is used to connect the stars from each other? (Line)
- many points can make a line. At least two points is needed to make a line.
PLANE
Quadrilaterals are used to represent plane. Cite examples of quadrilaterals. *linked within learning
area.
Defined terms in Geometry - terms that have a formal definition and can be defined using other
geometrical terms.
Discuss line segment (draw a line on the board and let one student to measure it, differentiate it from
line) *linked within learning area (measuring length)
Show a picture of the sun (relate ray and give the definition)
C. Practice
A B
C D
E F
1. The corner of the box represents a point. Give examples.
D. Perform
The concept of undefined terms can be represented by the real world things. Give 3 examples.
Rubrics: Accuracy: 10
Cooperation: 5
Timeliness: 5
Total: 20
E. Generalization
1. What is Geometry?
2. What are the three undefined terms in Geometry?
3. What is a line segment? A ray?
F. Evaluation
Direction: Answer the following. Write the letter of the correct answer.
G. Assignment
DIRECTION: List 5 real- life representations of points on the first column, of lines on the second
column, and of planes on the third column that you can see at home.
End!
