A Semi- Detailed Lesson Plan

In Mathematics 8

I. Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

1. illustrate the need for an axiomatic structure of a mathematical system in general, and in
Geometry in particular: (a) defined terms; (b) undefined terms; (c) postulates; and (d) theorems.

(M8GE-IIIa-c-1)

Specifically:

a. Describe and illustrate the three undefined terms in Geometry;

b. Draw segment and ray;
c. Realize the applicability of the concept of undefined terms in real world.

II. Learning Tasks

A. Subject Matter

Defined and Undefined Terms in Geometry

B. Learning Concepts

 The three undefined terms are the point, line and plane.
 The most common defined terms are the segment and ray.

C. Learning Process

Discovery, Observation, Discussion

D. Materials

LM, CG, Visual Aids, Power point Presentation

E. References

III. Developmental Activities

A. Pre-Acivity

1. Daily routine (Prayer, Checking of Attendance)

2. Motivation

-Play a video about the universe. *linked to Science Subject

B.Presentation

-present the lesson of the day and the objectives.

Define Geometry.

Geometry- is a branch of Mathematics that deals with the properties of space. It is a science that helps us
understand shapes and its relationship to the real world.
- geo (Earth), metron (Meausure)

 Undefined terms- building blocks of Geometry

- terms that can be described and illustrated but can’t defined since it is just an idea.

Undefined Terms in Geometry

POINT

Questions to ask: Have you ever watched the stars at night?

What do they look like? Dots.
Stars during the night look like dots.

A dot suggests the idea of one of the basic undefined terms in Geometry which is the point.
-the most important concept in Geometry no matter how insignificant it may be.
-no geometrical figure can be drawn without beginning with a point.
- We cannot define a point. We can just describe it.

Name Graphical Symbol Description

representation
Point A,  A It has no length, width or height.
Point G, A G It has no size or shape. Its just a basic
Point M M M idea in Geometry.
G No geometrical figure can be drawn
without beginning with a point.

LINE
Questions: Do you know what is in the screen? (A constellation: Big Dipper)
What is used to connect the stars from each other? (Line)
- many points can make a line. At least two points is needed to make a line.

Consider points A and B.

A
B

NAME GRAPHICAL SYMBOL DESCRIPTION

REPRESENTATION
line CD C CD , DC It has no width nor
D m thickness but it has
Or line m
And X infinite length.
A line extends in both
line XY direction endlessly and
Y XY , YX is one dimensional.
n Or line n

PLANE

Questions: What mathematical figures can see on the picture? (shapes:

rectangles)
How can you describe the bodies of land as seen on the picture?
(flat)

Name Graphical Symbol Description

Representation
Plane Q A plane is a flat surface
Plane ABC, A £ABC, that extends endlessly.
Plane BCA, or C £BCA, It has an infinite width
Plane CAB and length but has no
£CAB, thickness.
Or It is two- dimensional.
£Q

Quadrilaterals are used to represent plane. Cite examples of quadrilaterals. *linked within learning
area.

 Defined terms in Geometry - terms that have a formal definition and can be defined using other
geometrical terms.

 Discuss line segment (draw a line on the board and let one student to measure it, differentiate it from
line) *linked within learning area (measuring length)
 Show a picture of the sun (relate ray and give the definition)

1. The corner of the box represents a point. Give examples.

2. The edge of the box represents a line. Give examples.

3. The faces of the box represents a plane. Give examples.

D. Perform

 The concept of undefined terms can be represented by the real world things. Give 3 examples.

Group Activity: Classify Me!

Direction: Form 3 groups. Each group will be given different set of pictures. Classify each picture
whether it represents a point, line or plane. Paste the pictures to their appropriate column. The activity will
be done for 5 minutes. Assign presenter to report your work. (20 points)

Rubrics: Accuracy: 10
Cooperation: 5
Timeliness: 5
Total: 20

(See attached copy for the group activity)
