1. Letter to His Son’s Teacher
Annotations
Introduction: These lines are an extract from ‘Letter To His Son’s Teacher’ by the 16th president of United
States of America whose determination and adventuresome of completing the mission were the hall marks
of his success. Born is Feb 12, 1809 Abraham was assassinated by a mad actor while watching a drama
along with his wife in Washington. In the present easy he entrusts his son in the hope that teachers may craft
fully empower him with honesty, integrity, confidence and inculcate the right attitude.

General Reference: Lincoln believes that education is a potential tool for building up the complete
personality of a student. His plea to the teacher is not disguised as a screw-up to him but a mere request with
sincere concern on his Lovable son. The language is simple and direct.

General Relevance: Arunima stubbornly persisted and devoted herself to the task of honing her skills to
achieve her goal. She tactfully and courageously bore the brunt of the society. Her achievement will have its
fragrance and spread over to stay in the realm of women as long as life sustains on earth.
3. Digital Technologies
Introduction: These lines are an extract from ‘Digital Technologies’ shared by the authors-APJ Abdul
Kalam and Y.S.Rajan . They express the need of digital learning in every sector for our country’s growth. A
career scientist turned statesman, Kalam was honoured with over forty Doctorates. He is also called ‘Vishwa
guru’ Y.S;Rajan was also a scientist. He is honorary distinguished professor in Indian space Research
Organization.
General Relevance: The language is plain, matter of fact with full of information and references.

Critical appreciation: Rajaji opines that a University is the sanctum santoram of character, emitting its rays
on students. His speech is both profound and thought-provoking. He feels Youth and white paper take any
impression. ‘Education without character is fire without light’
POETRY
1. Common wealth of Bees
Reference: These lines are an extract from the poem ‘common wealth of Bees’ penned by the world
renowned playwright Shakespeare who is next to None. His powerful language, elegant characterization are
reviewed even to the present day world. His works include ‘Romeo and Juliet’, ‘Mid Summer Night dream’.
The tempest’-etc……The present poem is from his tragedy-Henry-V Act I Scene-2 Here he uses bees as a
metaphor for the human beings to run a well ordered kingdom.
Textual Quotations:
1) “Creatures that, by a rule in nature, teach
The art of order to a peopled kingdom”
2) “So may a thousand actions, once afoot,
End in one purpose.”
3) “Which pillage they with merry march bring home
To the tent-royal of their emperor;
Who, busied in his majesty, surveys.”
4) “The sad-eyed Justice, with his surly hum,
Delivering o’er to executors pale
The lazy, yawning drone.”
Critical appreciation: The poets succeeds in convincing the readers that when such ultimate co-operation is
there in a kingdom, the kingdom can simultaneously fight a war and maintain peace and security at home.
‘‘Good kingdom depends upon the conscientiousness as well as upon the
dexterity of its rulers”.
3. As I Grew Older
References: These lines are extracted from the poem “As I Grew Older” written by James Mercer Langston
Huges. Bitterness of Apartheid grieves the poet and finds expression in this poem. The dream infuses
strength in him to fight the racial discrimination, not with a gun but a pen.

2) “I lie down in the shadow…………before me.”

General Appreciation: His work expresses “Dream, but don’t slave it, emulate it” . He says “ Dream big’-
because it fills you with the hunger to achieve”.

4. To A Student
Reference : These lines are extracted from the poem ‘To A student’ penned by Kamala Wijeratne. She is a
Srilankan of simhalese Origin. It is an extract from her Anthology of poems-Millenium poems’- a state
literary prize winning work. It presents a complex problem in a simple language. The poem projects her
weeping heart for the tormented buds with ethnic conflict.

2) “I do know your ears…………..my voice.”
3) “My eyes as they see ……….flesh.”
4) “My ears echo bursts of ………………kindred blood.”

Critical Appreciation: Her choicest words bring not only the scene to eyes but sense her words
emote….."search for a herb that heals”-speaks volumes of her ‘longing for a new beginning’.

1. Engine Trouble
Rasipuram Krishnaswami Narayan(1906-2001) is the author of the work ‘The Engine Trouble’. The
most characteristic tone of his short story has a gentle irony, scintillating humour, controlled style with
realism and Irony. ‘The Guide’ is a high water mark of Narayana’s subtle technique.

Conclusion: R.K.Narayana blows life in every character he portrays. They are near to life. The Narrator at
last beats the air and makes the best of bad and proves-
