The Hospitality Industry

Overview Hospitality sector in India has achieved new heights today. Foreign travellers are showing new interest in our country, which has led to an enormous growth in the hospitality sector. Foreign Visitors to India has reached a record of approximately four million and the revenues have reached a height of approximately six billion US dollars. Hospitality Industry and travel & tourism industry is closely interlinked. India is attracting visitors from other countries and is emerging as a favorite holiday destination and due to this reason; hospitality industry is working overtime towards improving itself. The incoming international tourists are being taken care of by hotels specially five star hotels offering comfort, warmth and amusement amenities to their guests. Growth Of The Industry Commencing with a slow growth in the start of the millennium, the Indian tourism industry has performed quit well in the last couple of years. It has out performed the global tourism industry in terms of growth in the volume of international tourism as well as in terms of revenue. The World Trade and Tourism Council (WTTC) has named India along with China as of the most fastest growing tourism industries for the next 10-15 years. The key driver for this growth in Indian tourism has been a fast growing economy for the last 3-4 years. Despite lagging in the basic nfreastructure that supports the tourism industry, Indian tourism industry has been showing an impressive double-digit growth. In order to sustain this growth and meet the expectations, it is essential for the Government of India to invest in infrastructure such as transport and accomadations.

Segments in Hospitality Industry

Medical Tourism It is one of the fastest growing segments in India. India has the leverage of certain advantages over other countries like highly skilled doctors, cost effective treatment, improved quality of private healthcare etc. Some of the common treatments for which overseas patients to come to India are heart surgery, knee transplant, cosmetic surgery and dental care. India's traditional rejuvenation therapy like yoga and ayurvedic therapy are also very popular. Eco Tourism It is relatively new segment in India. It involves visiting natural areas without disturbing the fragile ecosystem. Eco tourism generates wealth for the local people, who in turn take measures to conserve and protect the environment and natural resources. The Himalayan region, Kerala, Northeast, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep islands the Western and Eastern Ghats are some of the hot spots for eco tourism in India. Heritage Tourism Heritage tourism is a very lucrative segment in India. It is believed that it would emerge as the most important segment within tourism in terms of revenue generation by 2010.India has a rich cultural history and reflection of its glorious past is still visible in its numerous forts, monuments, palaces, places of worship etc. Heritage tourism itself can be further classified as colonial heritage, urban renewal, religious tourism, industrial heritage and ethnicity. Adventure Tourism India's varied geographical and climatic conditions offer excellent opportunity for adventure sports. Adventure sports like river rafting, rock climbing, mountaineering, trekking, skiing, snow climbing, scuba diving and angling can be undertaken in the country and the country offers multiple locations to choose from. The trans Himalayan region, the Garhwal and Kumaon mountains, the Western Ghats, deserts of Rajasthan, Andaman and Lakshadweep islands are some of the most popular destination for adventure tourism.

The Hotel Industry

The Hotel Industry comprises a major part of the Tourism industry. Previously viewed as an industry providing a luxury service valuable to the economy only as a foreign exchange earner, the industry today contributes directly to employment (directly employing around 0.15 million people), and indirectly facilitates tourism and commerce. The Asiad, held in New Delhi in 1982, and the subsequent partial liberalization of the economy created tourism interest. Growth in demands for hotels was particularly high during early 1990s following the liberalization of Indian economy in FY1991. This promoted major chains, new entrants to invest major capital in this industry.

Structure of the Industry Hotels in India are broadly classified into categories:

Premium and luxury segment comprising of high-end 5-star and 5-star hotels. Mid-Market segment comprising of 3 and 4 star hotels. Catering to average forgein and leisure domestic travelers. Budget Segment Comprising of 1 and 2 star hotels. These do not offer as much facilities, they are inexpensive accommodations. Heritage Hotels Built on certain architecturally distinctive properties such as palaces and forts. Built prior to 1950s. Others These may comprise of several other types of hotels, motels and bed-sits and bed and breakfast rooms.

1. The Indian Hotels Company: The IHC and its subsidiaries are collectively known as Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces. 2. ITC/ Sheraton Corporation. 3. The Leela Group. 4. The Bharat Hotels Group.

5. The EIH Ltd (The Oberoi Group) 6. Indian Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC)/ The Ashoka Group. 7. Jaypee hotels Ltd.

Opportunities & Challenges


Considering India's Size and unparalleled diversity natural, geographical, cultural and artistic, travelers shall continue to surge into India, increasing demand for rooms, across all segments. The expected growth of the industry in future has provided its players with an opportunity to invest in new technologies such as CRM tools and latest security systems and venture into niche tourism sectors like medical, religious, cruise, casino, etc..

Incorporated by the founder of the Tata Group, Mr. Jamsetji N. Tata, the company opened its first property, The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Bombay in 1903. The Taj, a symbol of Indian hospitality, completed its centenary year in 2003. Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces comprises 93 hotels in 55 locations across India with an additional 16 international hotels in the Maldives, Malaysia, Australia, UK, USA, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Africa and the Middle East. Skills which I shall posses after my MBA degree


Knowledge of the various HR laws How to be team player, but most importantly a team leader. Adaptability: The MBA will allow me or help me to change with time and help me to be adaptable according to the situation. I will feel more confident as i would be having the expertise knowledge about the technical grounds. This will make my career path to progress. Good inter-personal skills. Be a good people manager.

Conclusion

Hospitality industry is an ever growing field. There is a huge potential in India for furthering tourism. Since most tourism in India is unorganized, to make it even and organized a lot of work needs to be done. Hospitality industry is a huge income generator for the economy. With the motto of 'Atithi Devo Bhava' , tourism in India shall away flourish.
