M1112SP IIIb 1
I. OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. illustrates the mean and variance of a discrete random variable; and
b. Solve the mean and variance of a discrete random variable.
III. PROCEDURE/STRATEGIES:
A. Preliminary Activities:
Prayer
Checking of Attendance
Setting the house rules
Checking Assignment
B. Motivation:
The teacher will be reviewing the previous lesson discrete and continuous random
variables.
The teacher will show types of random variables in a projector and let the students
identify if it is discrete or continuous variable.
Use the previous example in computing the mean and variance.
C. Presentation of the lesson proper:
(I Do It) The mean, or expected value, of a discrete random variable is
Compute the variance and standard deviation of the following probability distribution
which represents the number of DVDs a person rents from a video store during a single
visit.
The variance=(0-1.49)^2*0.06+(1-1.49)^2*0.58
+(2-1.49)^2*0.22+(3-1.49)^2*0.1
+(4-1.49)^2*0.03+(5-1.49)^2*0.01
=0.8699
Mean=0*0.06+1*0.58+2*0.22+3*
0.1+4*0.03+5*0.01
= 1.49
The teacher will explain the step by step in solving the mean and variance of random
variables.
Statistics test scores on Random Variables are described by the following probability
distribution.
Score 40 50 60 70 80
P(Score) .1 .2 .3 .3 .1
(you do it)
The number of suits sold per day at Suit World is shown in the probability distribution
below.
X 19 20 21 22 23
P(X) 0.2 0.2 0.3 0.2 0.1
Find the mean, variance, and standard deviation of the distribution.
IV. Application/Assessment: ½ lengthwise
1. The Bank of America VP feels that each savings account customer has, on average, three credit
cards. The following distribution represents the number of credit cards people own.
X 0 1 2 3 4
P(X) 0.18 0.44 0.27 0.08 0.03
a. Find the mean, and variance.
