Statement Of Purpose

Intro:

I, Md Muhtasim Alam Chowdhury, a citizen of Bangladesh by birth, would like to describe the purposes of my higher
education in Australia with the highest gratitude and submission. At the University of Wollongong (UOW), one of
Australia's renowned universities for higher education, I'm mainly interested in conducting postgraduate research and
pursuing a Master of Engineering (Electrical Engineering). Additionally, I'm considering applying to Australia because I
want to have the finest education I can, which will give me the best opportunity of finding employment in Bangladesh.
With an Australian Master's Degree and experience, I may eventually land a top position as a research scientist, faculty
member, or reputable electrical engineer in a Bangladeshi research organization, university, or reputed engineering firm.

My Family Background:

My parents and one younger brother make up my small family. My father is a prominent businessman and contractor in
Bangladesh and my mother is a homemaker. As a result, I am the elder son of my family, and every member of my family
loves me and will assist me in Australia if I need it. My parents also want me to get a good education in a well-known
country like Australia to have a successful career in the future.

My Education Background:

Since earning my undergraduate degree from North South University, one of the best universities in Bangladesh, my goal
has been to be a prominent research scientist or faculty member. My long-term objective is to work as a professor, ideally
in Bangladesh. On the other hand, devotion, passion, and a high-quality education are essential components of a thriving
vocation. I've been a motivated and focused student ever since high school. Additionally, I obtained good results on the
Higher Secondary School Certificate Exam (HSC) and Secondary School Certificate (SSC) tests. In 2014, I completed my
Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) with the best GPA of 5 out of 5 from Cantonment Public School & College, Rangpur.
My academic standing and entrance exam results helped me enroll at North South University in 2015 with a major in
Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. After that, I remained committed and finished my
undergraduate degree in 2019.

I have completed my B.Sc. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from North South University (NSU), Bangladesh, with a
CGPA of 3.86/4.00 (93%–94% marks), placing among the top 3% of students of the summer 2015 batch at the department
of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Moreover, I received a 100% tuition fee waiver as an award through my
admission test at NSU, which helped me study the whole BSc without paying any tuition fees. On the other hand, I'm
pretty keen on extracurricular activities. For instance, I participated in a debate, senior student farewell, and new student
orientation at my undergraduate institution. In addition, I was part of the Innovation Challenge and capstone project
showcase season 7 organized by the ACM student chapter at North South University (securing first place in a project
showcase competition judged by experts from the fields of both industry and academia). I have done a few projects
during my undergrad. The first one is a home automation device made for the assistance of elderly people. Then I
developed my award-winning project, the Human Arm Exoskeleton, for the stroke patient’s rehabilitation purposes.

I worked on several projects during the pandemic, including the smart transformer theft protection system, smart parking
systems, and so on. All of my works are published in either renowned journals or IEEE conferences. Also, to increase my
knowledge and expertise to work at a high level, I have completed several training courses and seminars, participated in
various academic projects, and trained in and acquired necessary programming and software skills like Python, Matlab,
Autocad, CircuitLab, HSPICE, PSPICE, LabVolt, Multisim, Lab-view, etc.

Professional Experience:

After completing my undergraduate degree from North South University (NSU), I got an excellent opportunity to work as a
lab officer in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the same institution in August 2019, where I
worked until March 2022. Moreover, I currently serve as a lab instructor at North South University. In this job, my main
work is to take lab courses, which include teaching, taking exams, and to grade. Also, this job contains doing
administrative work for the department. I have taught these courses: Electrical Machine Lab, Signals and Systems Lab,
Control System, and Analog Electronics Lab. Also, I am a part-time lecturer at Presidency University, another good
institution in the country.

Though my professional life started during the last year of my undergrad while I was appointed as a teacher assistant in
the department of mathematics and physics at North South University, My key responsibilities were to help the students
in their studies, assist the faculty in preparing the quiz questions, and do script checking. Also, I have worked as a research
assistant in the same department under the supervision of Dr. Mohammad Sahadet Hossain, who is currently the chair
and professor of this department. Our research topic was based on control theory. In that project, our goal was to create
a model order reduction technique for linear discrete-time periodic systems using the Krylov subspace method and
various theorems from linear algebra. My contribution was to find appropriate theorems for our idea and solve
mathematical equations based on those theorems to ensure that the desired results were obtained. Also, I developed the
algorithm using MATLAB, which can analyze the whole system and extract the reduced-order model from that extensive
system.

The Purpose of Higher Education in Master of Electrical Engineering:

A foreign degree also has a higher likelihood of resulting in future job development and career success than one earned in
a developing nation like Bangladesh. As a result, employers prefer overseas degrees to degrees from Bangladesh, notably
in public and private university faculty recruitments and research professor. By earning a Master of Engineering-Electrical
Engineering degree from a top university like the University of Wollongong, I would be able to build highly competitive
theoretical and research abilities in the research and development sector electrical and related engineering sectors, etc.,
Similarly, the teaching methodologies and approaches used at the University of Wollongong enable students like me to
complete paid internships and obtain research experience from Australian institutions and international organizations
also, building the foundation for a future career in a prestigious organization, research center, or university sector.

Additionally, the Master of Electrical Engineering is designed to meet the needs of internationally trained researchers,
engineering graduates, faculty professionals, etc., allowing them to utilize their prior knowledge and skills to become
eligible for in-demand positions. Therefore, I intend to pursue further education in Australia to gain the necessary
knowledge and skills that will help me on my path and enhance my career in Bangladesh. This is the primary reason I am
applying. I must thoroughly understand the subject and obtain practical and extensive research experience to become a
competent research professor and get a top position in Bangladesh. Also, the university's tuition fees are affordable and
student-friendly compared to others.

Therefore, I have decided to work toward a Master of Engineering degree to fulfill my ambition of becoming a recognized
researcher and reputed faculty member.

How is this proposed program relevant to my previous study?

I have completed my undergraduate from electrical and electronic engineering from North South University, the degree
and four years long journey well prepared me to pursue higher education in electrical engineering and related fields. In
addition, I have completed various foundation and advanced courses related to my intended master of electrical
engineering program- with outstanding performance. Moreover, I currently serve as a Lab Instructor at North South
University. I have taught these courses: Electrical machine Lab, Signals and Systems Lab, Control System and Analog
Electronics Lab. Also, I am a part-time lecturer at Presidency University, where I am teaching electrical and electronic
engineering courses, which made me subject expert and prepared to get an advanced degree. So, I wish to pursue

2|P a ge
Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering, which completely aligned with my previous education background and
research background. In addition, in this two-year master’s program, out of 96 credit points (14 subjects), I have basic
knowledge of 36 credit points (6 subjects). Subjects like power system analysis (ECTE923), embedded systems (ECTE833),
power electronics (ECTE826), etc. were included in my undergrad curriculum. I firmly believe that my previous
background will help me cope with academic study at the University of Wollongong while maintaining high academic
standard.

Reasons for choosing Australia for higher education:

There are several benefits to choosing Australia over the UK or other industrialized nations. Most people think of
kangaroos, koalas, substantial open spaces, and clean air and water when they think of Australia. However, Australia was
my choice since it has weather that is the closest to that in my nation. The master of electrical engineering degree in
Bangladesh is not as extensive as the one provided by the University of Wollongong, even though few institutions in
Bangladesh offer it or programs comparable to it. Additionally, a few public institutions offer master's degrees in electrical
engineering, although admission is highly competitive and the quality of instruction and learning environments do not
compare to what is provided by universities in Australia. Furthermore, Australian universities emphasize research-based
learning and practical, usable education, whereas Bangladeshi institutions prioritize theoretical subjects lacking of
sufficient funding and research opportunities. Also, Bangladeshi University curriculum is not up-to-date and
comprehensive, which I can get in the University of Wollongong. I hope that the University of Wollongong will give me all
of the academic and practical training and research experience I need to be competitive as an electrical engineer.

In addition, the University of Wollongong offers a perfect setting for living and studying for an international student.
Living there is simple because of the natural surroundings, moderate climate, and tiny population. In addition, it boasts
strong educational standards and reasonable access to a big metropolis. It boasts a strong economy and lots of
opportunities for part-time work. Because of these factors, Wollongong is the most excellent place for me to reside while
studying in the future. Before settling in Australia for my higher education, I considered several nations, including the
USA, the UK, and Canada. I learned that Australian institutions are friendlier to students, cheaper, and give enough help to
international students. Moreover, New South Wales, sometimes known as NSW, is a state located on Australia's east
coast. It is, without a doubt, the greatest state in Australia. More than any other Australian state, this one allows students
to travel extensively and visit in many landscapes. In all of NSW, subtropical rainforests may be found. And NSW is among
the most impressive and secure destinations worldwide for international students to study and live. Moreover, higher
education in Australia contributes to students' growth and improvement, as well as my self-esteem.

As a result, it is possible that students from all over the world will be lured to Australia's top-notch educational system,
which will benefit current and future students like myself. Considering all of the important and learning resources, I
believe that pursuing higher education in Australia is the best decision I've ever made.

The Reason for Choosing the University of Wollongong:

As I've already stated, I chose to study in Australia rather than finish my higher education in Bangladesh to obtain a
degree of the highest caliber. But I've been looking for a fantastic location to study and conduct research since 2021. The
University of Wollongong is renowned for its commitment to excellence in teaching and learning. One of the most well-
known states in Australia is New South Wales, which offers excellent living circumstances for students, stimulating
research opportunities, and a wealth of support for international students. In addition, I considered several Australian
universities before choosing the University of Wollongong. I prefer the University of Wollongong because of its affordable
tuition rates, good student-to-faculty ratios, study spaces, top-notch research facilities with multiple reputed lab and
cultural activities, as well as its location in a particular part of New South Wales and its pleasant cities. One of the top
graduate engineering programs is at the University of Wollongong. In terms of electrical and electronic engineering,
University of Wollongong is among the top 200 institutions (top 1% of universities) in the world.

According to U.S. News Education, it is ranked 186th among the best global universities and ranked 12th in Australia.
Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) is ranked 181st in terms of subject ranking, demonstrating its credibility in
terms of teaching facilities and EEE is ranked 207th in terms of research and publication. That’s why, I choose the
3|P a ge
University. It is a well-known graduate program for electrical engineering related research. I will have the chance to do
research relevant to my field of study. In addition, Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is ranked 171st according
to U.S. News rankings, but the tuition fees at QUT are much higher than at UOW. Also, regarding subject (EEE) ranking,
QUT is ranked 310th, whereas UOW is ranked 181st. Also, in terms of research facilities, UOW is far more advanced than
QUT. After comparing many of the universities in Australia, I have found UOW best suited for me in terms of study,
research, and living.

The University of Wollongong has industry research engagements and funding opportunities for researchers' work.
Moreover, it is known as a research powerhouse because almost every program holds at least 2 or 3 research centers. The
Department of Electrical Engineering has several centers on power, autonomous systems, communication, and signal
processing. Signals, Information, and Communications Research (SICOM) is composed of five research centers, and the
funding directly comes from the industry. The works of Wireless Technologies Laboratory (WTL) on energy-efficient
communication systems for IoT and wirelessly powered communication networks piqued my attention.

Additionally, the Master's program's courses are highly beneficial for electrical engineers and will improve my abilities as
an engineer, researcher, and well-known faculty member in Bangladesh. Wollongong, home to one of the world's most
cutting-edge institutions, is the ideal location for students. Studying and living in this thriving, multicultural city, which is
located on one of Australia's most stunning beaches, is simple. Because of UOW's dynamic learning environment, I may
one day be more than a student and a prominent faculty member and researcher. The Federal and State governments
and independent experts have acknowledged the UOW as a significant Australian source of top-notch education and
cutting-edge research since its founding in 1951. Australia's current gold-standard institution is the University of
Wollongong. It has established a reputation as a center for entrepreneurship that approaches research and instruction
from various disciplinary perspectives. It is recognized as one of the best contemporary universities in the world.

per month. Moreover, Salaries range from 60,000 BDT (the lowest) to 140,000 BDT (the highest). This is my expected
future career once I graduate from the University of Wollongong in Australia, which is likely in Bangladesh if I have a
foreign degree and experience. My degree will help me further my career and land a desired position in Bangladesh as a
reputable research scientist or faculty member. I'm confident that with the Master of Electrical Engineer degree
certificate, I would be able to secure top jobs in Bangladeshi academic and research institutes and return home to live
with my parents. This will teach me a lot about my field of interest. The University of Wollongong has reputed faculty
members also include research scientists and expertise with related interests whose work I value and who will inspire me
in my future profession. The exciting academic atmosphere at the University of Wollongong and my connections with
well-known academics will help me grow as a subject specialist and possibly as a research scientist or faculty member.

Career Plans After Graduation:

Like always, I'm open to acquiring new abilities to advance my studies and professional career. My opportunities for work
in my country would grow with the Master of Electrical Engineering degree, I will obtain in Australia. Since completing my
undergraduate program, I intend to enroll in a reputed Australian institution to pursue an MS in electrical engineering. As
I am currently working in NSU as Lab instructor, obtaining a foreign degree will open a chance for me to join NSU as
faculty member. Basically, I can join as faculty in NSU after having a foreign degree, which will be a promotion form lab
instructor to Faculty or a research scientist any renowned university in Bangladesh and one of the leading researchers in
Bangladesh in the sectors of robotics, IoT, power and control systems. This Master's degree is one of my promotions from
lab instructor to lecturer. At North South University, if any lab instructor gets a foreign degree, he or she will be promoted
to senior lecturer. So, this is one of the main reasons for getting a master's degree and the long-term goal.

Finance for Education Abroad:

My father will bear all my study expenses at University of Wollongong and my living expenses in Wollongong. My father is
a businessman and contractor for the Roads and Highway Division in Bangladesh; his monthly income comes from three
different sources. The first one comes from his contractual work via road and highway projects, which is approximately
70,000 to 80,000 BDT per month. This range varies, considering the size of the project. The second one comes from his
agricultural and stock market businesses. He has several agricultural lands and ponds for fish harvesting. From the pond
lease, he earns approximately 40,000 BDT per month, and from selling agricultural goods, he earns approximately 25,000
BDT per month. The last of my father's monthly income sources come from rental income. We have a shop and two
houses in the center of Rangpur City (3rd largest division in Bangladesh). All three of them are rentals. The rental income
from these properties is approximately 60,000 BDT per month. Also, we have our own house in Rangpur city. My father's
monthly income is estimated to be between 190,000 and 200,000 BDT, or about 24 lac BDT (AUD $ 34,900 Approx.) per
year. So, my father's income is more than enough to cover all my costs in Australia.

Incentive to Return to Bangladesh:

My parents and only brother, whom I adore, are staying in Bangladesh, and they own several significant properties there.
In the future, my elderly parents may require my assistance, and I feel obligated to take care of our family and its assets
because my younger brother won't be able to do so. So, I'll return home to look after my parents, my younger brother,
and the properties. Also, I feel sorry that my younger brother is not fully physically fit from his childhood. I want to return
to my native country as soon as I finish my studies here in Australia. My entire family resides in Bangladesh; thus, I will be
responsible for managing the household finances as well as my parents, profession, and younger brother. I was born and
raised in this nation; therefore, I have a deep emotional connection to it. I must come back to the country and will live
with my family and make a significant contribution in the community.
