A LESSON PLAN ON PRESENT TENSE- SIMPLE AND PROGRESSIVE

Subject: Language Arts


Grade Level: Middle School (6th-8th)

Objective: Students will be able to identify and use the present tenses of verbs, specifically the
simple present tense and the present progressive tense.

Materials:

Whiteboard and markers


Present tense verb worksheets
Verb tense game materials (optional)

Procedure:

I. Introduction (5 minutes)

 Begin the lesson by reviewing the concept of verbs, and ask students if they know what
a verb is.
 Once students have offered their ideas, define verbs as words that describe an action,
occurrence, or state of being.
 Introduce the concept of verb tenses, and explain that verbs can be used in different
forms to indicate the time frame of an action.

II. Simple Present Tense (20 minutes)

 Explain that the simple present tense is used to describe an action that is happening
right now, or an action that happens regularly or habitually.
 Provide examples of simple present tense verbs, such as "I walk to school," "She sings in
the shower," or "They study every day."
 Write a sentence on the board that uses the simple present tense, and ask the students
to identify the tense and the verb.
 Distribute simple present tense verb worksheets, and have students complete them,
identifying simple present tense verbs in sentences.

III. Present Progressive Tense (20 minutes)

 Explain that the present progressive tense is used to describe an action that is
happening right now, or an action that is ongoing and has not yet been completed.
 Provide examples of present progressive tense verbs, such as "I am walking to school,"
"She is singing in the shower," or "They are studying right now."
 Write a sentence on the board that uses the present progressive tense, and ask the
students to identify the tense and the verb.
 Distribute present progressive tense verb worksheets, and have students complete
them, identifying present progressive tense verbs in sentences.
IV. Practice (20 minutes)

 Divide the students into groups and give each group a set of verb tense game materials.
 Provide instructions on how to play a game of verb tense charades or verb tense fill-in-
the-blank using present tense verbs.
 Have each group take turns acting out verbs or filling in the blank with the correct
present tense verb, and the other group members will need to identify if it is in the
simple present or present progressive tense.
 This will serve as a fun and engaging way for the students to practice identifying and
using different present tense verbs.

V. Application (15 minutes)

 Have the students take out a piece of paper and write three sentences, one using the
simple present tense, one using the present progressive tense, and one using both
tenses.
 Encourage them to be creative and use a variety of different verbs to make their writing
more interesting.

VI. Conclusion (5 minutes)

 Review the concepts of simple present tense and present progressive tense covered in
the lesson and ask students if they have any questions or if they need any additional
clarification on either concept.
 Encourage the students to continue practicing identifying and using different tenses of
verbs in their everyday lives, and to pay attention to the verbs they come across in their
reading and writing.

Assessment:

Students will be assessed through their participation in the verb tense game, completion of the
simple present tense and present progressive tense worksheets, and the quality of their
sentences that include both tenses.

Modification:

For students who struggle with writing or have difficulty with the lesson content, you can
provide them with additional resources or work with them one-on-one to help them better
understand the material
