I. CONTENT/ TOPIC: TRANSLATED PARABOLA

 HARDWORKING
II. OBJECTIVES:

 Differentiate parabola that has translated vertex from a parabola which vertex lies on the
origin.

 Apply standard form equation of a parabola that has translated Vertex.

 Graph a parabola that has translated vertex.

III. REFERENCE:
Teaching guide for Senior High School Precalculus Core Subject, Pages 22-26.
Concept Note #5:
Standard Equation of a Parabola with Translated vertex

Vertical Axis (upward)

Vertical Axis (downward)

(x − h) = 4p(y − k)
(x − h)2 = -4p(y − k)
vertex: (h, k)
vertex: (h, k)
focus: (h, k + p)
focus: (h, k - p)
directrix: y = k – p
directrix: y = k + p
axis of symmetry: x = h
axis of symmetry: x = h

Horizontal Axis (to the right) Horizontal Axis (to the left)

(y − k)2 = 4p(x − h) (y − k)2 = 4p(x − h)

vertex: (h, k) vertex: (h, k)

focus: (h+p, k) focus: (h-p, k)

directrix: y = h – p directrix: y = h + p

After the teacher discusses the Standard equation of a parabola with
translated vertex then he/she ask the students:
1. What do you mean by a parabola with translated vertex?

b. ANALYSIS:
The teacher will ask the students on what they have understand
about the topic based on the given concept note.
1. What required values we need to get in order to help us get the
location of each part in the parabola and also helps us to graph it?
2. What can you say to the value of our p?

c. ABSTRACTION:
The teacher will give a problem, and then the students need to
apply what they have learned.

Given the equation (y + 3)2 = 4(x + 1), find the vertex,focus and directrix and
then graph the parabola.

d. ASSESSMENT:
1. Write an equation of a parabola whose vertex is at (−2, 1) and whose
focus is at (−3, 1).
2. Write an equation of the parabola whose vertex is at (– 2, 3) and
whose focus is at (– 4, 3).
3. Write the standard form of a parabola with vertex at (3, – 1) and focus
at (3, 2).
