Circle

 A circle is the set of all points ( x , y ) in a plane that are

equidistant from a fixed point (h , k ) called the center of
the circle
 The distance r between the center and any point ( x , y ) on
the circle is the radius

The Distance Formula can be used to obtain an equation of a circle whose center is (h , k ) and
whose radius is r .

√ ( x−h ) +( y−k ) =r

Standard Form of the Equation of a Circle
 The standard form of the equation of a circle is
( x−h )2+ ( y −k )2=r 2
The point (h , k ) is the center of the circle, and the positive number is the radius of the circle.
The standard form of the equation of a circle whose center is the origin,( h , k ) =(0,0) is

x + y =r

IV. Questions/Activity
Finding the Standard Equation of a Circle
1. The point (1,4) is on a circle whose center is at (−2 ,−3 ) as shown in the figure. Write
the standard form of the equation of the circle

2. Write down the equation of a circle with radius 8 and center (−4,7).

b. Analysis
 Let the students answer the questions/activity above.

c. Abstraction
 Summary of the lesson

d. Application/Assessment No. 2
Directions: Give the standard equation of the circle satisfying the given conditions.
 center at the origin, radius 4
 center (−4 , 3) radius √ 7

V. Assignment
 Have an advance reading about transforming standard equation of a circle to general form and vice
versa
 Activities are to be submitted on Friday and be ready with short quiz
