(Q5) Over time, the demand for wheat has shifted to the right. Why has this occurred?

Ans- Following a change in an underlying demand determinant, the position of the demand
curve will shift to the left or right. A movement to the right in the demand curve indicates an
increase in demand. This might be due to a variety of circumstances, such as an increase in
income, an increase in the price of a substitute, or a decrease in the price of a supplement. A
shift in demand to the right means an increase in the quantity demanded at every price. For
example, if drinking cola becomes more fashionable demand will increase at every price. An
increase in demand can be illustrated by a shift in the demand curve to the right.

One factor is that the population is growing (both because the American population increases
and because farmers are able to sell more in foreign markets). Another factor is that earnings
are rising. However, according to Engel's Law, the income elasticity of demand for grain-
based products is low. This means that when earnings grow, so does demand for these items
(and many other food products). A third explanation for the increase in demand is a
movement in consumer preferences toward eating more meat. Wheat demand grows when
people consume more meat. This happens because about 90% of the sun's energy is lost when
an animal eats a plant and then a person consumes the plant. However, as dieters
experimented with all-protein diets, preferences may have produced a leftward shift in wheat
demand in recent years.
