Below you will find two questions that will require you to apply knowledge from the course
to some of the set texts. Answer each question in a few sentences, using the space
provided. You should use the Norton in answering these questions, including in order to
provide literary evidence for your answers.

In answering the question, provide appropriate quotations from the literary work where
possible. After quoting, provide author and page number (if available) in parentheses; a
works cited list is not required.

1. Byatt, “The Thing in the Forest”: Quote the line(s) containing the story’s inciting
incident and explain its relation to the rest of the plot.

2. Marvell, “To His Coy Mistress”: What type of figurative language is used in line 34,
and how does that use of figurative language influence the poem’s meaning?

Below you will find a question that will require you to analyze a text or combination of texts
in greater depth. You should answer each question in a coherent paragraph. There is no
required word count, but keep in mind that paragraphs should be concise. In answering the
question, provide appropriate quotations from the literary work where possible. After
quoting, provide author and page number (if available) in parentheses; a works cited list is
not required.

1. Compare and contrast the use of sound patterns in William Carlos Williams’s “The
Dance” (H) and Theodore Roethke’s “My Papa’s Waltz.”
