Subject: New DVD Multidrive Replaces Freedom Workstation DVDs Date: March 15, 2005

Summary: A new IDE DVD Multidrive SW-9573-C, PN 0503088, is now being shipped with all
Freedom Workstations replacing the older DVD drive, PN 0502771.
Attached to this newsletter is the Multidrive Technical Fact Sheet which will also be available
in the next update of the Freedom Service Manual, PN 0889513, Section 7, Reference
Diagrams.
If it is necessary to order a new drive, only the IDE DVD Multidrive can be ordered as a
replacement for the older drive. The order must include an IDE ribbon cable, PN 0146064,
which is not included with the DVD Multidrive.

A: Front Panel:
a. Operation Indicator Lamp
Steady Green: Disc inserted in the drive
Steady Orange: Recording, playback or tray opening/closing
Flashing Green: Error - The operation indicator lamp blinks to indicate malfunction.

explanation. See page A41 for troubleshooting information and pages A42 through
A46 for proper handling of Discs types.
b. Manual Eject Hole
Used to manually eject the tray in the event it doesn’t eject normally using the
open/close button or software commands. Turn off the computer and use this procedure
as a last resort as it can cause malfunction.

When securing this drive to a computer or other device, secure the drive with the
provided mounting screws into the areas as indicated (either upper or lower holes
depending on system). You can also use the four holes on the bottom to secure the
drive.

Changing the Jumper Pin Setting

Drives are usually set as Masters at time of shipment and must be properly configured when installed. There is a
jumper pin switch on the rear panel of the drive. Use caution when mounting the jumper pins. Do not mount the
jumper pin sideways or in any position other than specified. This can cause the drive to malfunction.

Connecting the Drive to the Computer

Mounting screw holes are located in eight places on the right and left panels of the drive, and in four places on the
bottom panel. When securing the drive into a computer or other device, secure the drive firmly in place with four
mounting screws (included) in four places on the right and left panels or in four places on the bottom panel. Note:
Only use the screws included with the drive. Using screws with a different length or diameter may damage the
drive.

Inserting DVD-RAM, DVD-R and other Discs

A: DVD-RAM Discs
a. DVD-RAM disc b. Label and c. Tray
1. Insert so the label-side of the shutter is facing up. 2. Push the DVD-RAM disc about 2 cm towards the drive.
3. Press gently on the shutter-label so the DVD-RAM disc sits firmly on the tray.

B: Other Discs such as non-cartridge DVD-RAM and DVD-R Discs


d. Stopper, e. Disc holder A, f. Disc holder B, g. Label, h. DVD-RAM, DVD-R, +R, DVD-RW, +RW, CD-R,
CD-RW, CD-ROM or DVD-ROM disc, i. Disc guide, and j. Indent for 8-cm discs. Set 8-cm discs in the indent. Set
12-cm discs so the forward edge is under the stopper and the sides are under the left-right disc holders and are
between the disc guides. Discs cannot be read and may be damaged if you insert them incorrectly. Remove 8-cm
DVD-RAM from their cartridges before use, Refer to the disc’s instructions for details. 1. Place the forward edge
of the disc under the stopper. 2. Place the sides of the disc under the disc holders (A, B). 3. Set the disc so it fits
inside the disc guides.
