Hi! | amin the midst of writing a research paper and
have a BAD case of writer's block. Could the scholars
of Twitter please reply how they believe people can
combat the pervasiveness of monolingualism?

Let's start here. It seems most scholars can agree that
monolingual ideology (the the notion that communication only
happens through one language at a time) is false. It is also
largely agreed that this concept roots from America's history
of Violent colonialism. But how do we fix this?

As a professor of African Studies at Pennsylvania State
University, it is my opinion that the only way to break the
reliance on the English language is by implementing
de-colonization practice. There needs to be a broader
acceptance of #AAE (African American English) as a standard
form of English

Agreed. As an assistant professor at Santa Clara University, |
just taught a multilingual FYC (First Year Composition) class
that embraced decolonial pedagogies, and it was powerful to
see students share their diverse perspectives and challenge
dominant narratives. This is what trans formative learning looks
like. #decoloniality #multilingualism #FYC

| would blend both of these ideas. Language learning is not
about assimilation, it's about embracing diversity and
empowering students to use all their linguistic and cultural
resources. Let's ditch the 'English Only' policy and create
inclusive and multilingual classrooms that support student
success. #multilingualism #inclusion

For what it is worth, | am a fellow writing studies advocate and |
agree with everyone before me but | have not seen anyone
discuss the importance of promoting translingual practices
(such as code-switching) by accepting this we can challenge
monolingual and English-centric ideologies and promote
linguistic and cultural pluralism

As a Unangax scholar in the field of Indigenous studies, | am
taking a more radical position than my colleagues. In order to
break monolingual ideologies, we need to stop acting like settler
colonialism is a thing of the past. It is a reality that structures
our lives and perpetuates harm on Indigenous peoples.

As someone specializing in the study of bilingualism, | believe
language policies reflect national identity construction. In the
US, this has often meant English-only laws and assimilationist
policies. WE NEED TO PROMOTE AN END TO LANGUAGE
POLICIES.
(such as English-only laws and the establishment of English as
the sole medium of instruction in schools)

To wrap everything up, | want people to respond with a
question they have regarding monolingual ideologies.

My final thoughts are this: What will it take for non-black
individuals to perceive AAE (African American English) as a
legitimate form of communication in the English language ??

The question | ask is: How can we center the student learning
experience when teaching students English?

Im looking for real strategies here. So my question is: What
strategies have you found effective in promoting linguistic
diversity and challenging English-only policies in your
classrooms or communities? #linguisticdiversity #

How can we create language policies that respect and celebrate
linguistic diversity, rather than reinforcing dominant language
ideologies? Share your thoughts and experiences! #

To answer both of your questions: Our education system needs
to be reinvented to free itself of its colonial practices that
especially harm indigenous people. There is no other way. #

As a Ukrainian-American, | ask this: What impact has the war in
Ukraine had on language policies and practices, and how can
we ensure that linguistic diversity is valued and respected
during times of political conflict? #UkraineWar #languagepolicy #
