Course/yr: BSEd 2 SCIENCE

Lab Partner(s): Mr. CLAMOHOY, DEXTER
Ms. CAÑETE, NOVIE C.
Lab Experiment: CHEMISTRY LAB SAFETY
Instructor: Ms. EDNA SUMAGANG

Introduction:
The importance of laboratory safety has been recognized for many years
in industry. However, educational institutions have been slower to adopt such
safety practices and programs.

Objectives:
● Reduce the risk of laboratory employees becoming injured or
unwell.
● Provide a safe working and learning environment for workers and
students who may be exposed to toxins.
● You may assist to reduce or minimize dangers by being familiar with
the laboratory you're working in and always following correct safety
practices.

Materials:
o Goggles
o Lab Coat
o Gloves
o Tongs
o Eye Wash Station
o Fume Hoods
o Fire Extinguisher
o Beaker
o First-aid Kit
o Spill Kit

Procedures:
Goggles- are types of protective eyewear that enclose or protect the
region around the eye, preventing particles, water, or chemicals from impacting
the eyes.
Lab Coat/Gown- fasten close to the collar to provide optimal protection.
Gloves- when handling hazardous materials, chemicals of unknown
toxicity, corrosive materials, rough or sharp-edged objects, and very hot or very
cold materials.
Tongs- are large pincers for grasping and lifting vessels of heat-resistant
material used in high temperature chemical reactions.
Eye Wash Station- Don't wait a second longer to go to the eyewash
station! Flush should be started at this point. Fingers to keep your eyes open.
Make a squint. For a total of fifteen minutes, flush the toilet. Remove your lenses
from your eyes. Consult a physician.
Fume Hoods- An exhaust fan on the roof of the laboratory building draws
air and airborne pollutants via ducts and exhausts them into the environment.
Fire Extinguisher- Observe proper housekeeping. Keep work areas
uncluttered, and clean frequently. Put unneeded materials back in storage
promptly.
Beaker/Glassware- A beaker is a cylindrical container used in labs to hold,
mix, and heat liquids. To prevent spilling the liquid, carefully pour it into the
beaker. To estimate the volume of liquid in the beaker, use the measurement
lines on the beaker. Using a spoon or stirrer, stir the liquid inside the beaker.
First-aid Kit- Remove chemical bottles from work area of Facilities
personnel working in laboratories.
Spill Kit- Confine the spill to a small area. Use a commercial kit or
absorbent material from your spill kit to absorb spilled materials.

Analysis:
Any chemical should be avoided whenever possible. Never inhale, taste,
or smell laboratory chemicals. After removing gloves and leaving the work area,
wash your hands and arms with soap and water. In the laboratory, never eat,
drink, chew gum or tobacco, smoke, or apply cosmetics.

Discussion/Observation:
Using Chemistry Lab make sure you thoroughly read the instructions
before starting a lab. Safety goggles are a must they must be worn in the lab at
all times also get a lab coat to protect your clothing and more importantly to
protect your skin, also shoes that covers the top of your feet are very important
this goes for the ladies and for the guys that there are no flip-flops allowed in the
lab.
Make sure that you have long loose-fitting pants, to protect from
chemicals also to ladies have a long hair always remember to wear hairband or
to tie your hair.
Make sure that there’s no eating or drinking in the lab for your safety and
definitely no smoking this includes the new electronic cigarettes they are not
allowed in the lab.
Never handle hot objects with your bare hands you are provided with heat-
resistant gloves and tongs in in the lab.
Always remember to wear safety gloves while working in the chemistry
lab. Make sure that you familiarized yourself with the different features in the lab,
in case of an emergency situation, look around and see where all your exits are
known. Where your eye wash station is though where your shower is your
emergency shutoff, your emergency gas shutoff, and familiarize yourself with all
the fume hoods, know where the fire extinguisher is in case of an emergency
also. Treat all chemicals as hazardous and make sure to read your labels twice
to make sure you have the right chemical.
Do not weigh materials directly on the balance pads, use glassware such
as a beaker or a designed weigh paper. If ever you cut yourself, immediately
rinse the affected area and the instructor will come with a first-aid kit. The first
thing you should do if something breaks in the lab is tell your instructor
immediately, your instructor will then guide you where the brooms and dustpan
are to handle this broken glassware. Remember broken glassware it only goes
into broken glassware then we don’t throw paper disposal on it or any other
ways in the broken glass disposal.
If you spill chemical first contact your instructor and let them know that a
chemical has been spilled it, will then instruct you how to handle the chemicals
spill either using a spill kit or with small spills possibly using paper towels.
Never taste chemicals and never smell chemicals directly, always waft. If
chemical spills occur on your clothing, you must first remove the affected area
and then rinse immediately. If the chemicals splash in into your eye, immediately
proceed over eye wash station, every lab is equipped with an eye wash station,
rinse it for at least 15 minutes or until the chemicals fully removed.
To prevent contamination of stock reagents, never return chemicals to
the stock bottle either share with another student or dispose of as instructed.
Before you pour know how much you need to reduce the waste of chemicals
use distilled water for reactions or making solutions, do not waste the distilled
water by washing your glassware. In the event of a fire, notify your instructor
immediately and they give you instructions on how to handle the situation. In
case your clothing catches fire stop, drop, and roll immediately.
Make sure you never touch your hands to your face or your body while in the
lab. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly before leaving the lab.
Remember to wipe down your lab station before you leave the lab.

Conclusion:
Lab safety is critical because it protects individuals from serious injury. Lab
safety refers to the regulations that must be followed in every lab in order to
keep everyone safe. It is possible that you will be injured if you do not follow the
lab safety regulations.
