CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

The major liability or drawbacks of communication lines comes because of the

distortion of electrical lines or lack of generation of electricity as in remote areas or

during disaster or natural calamities. To set back such drawbacks, we need a renewable

source of energy which can function round the clock without any disruption.

Solar power bank is one of its kind. It works on the power of the sun, converting

solar to electrical and helps in charging the cell phones which can be used in

communication, and thus, turns to be vital during disasters and power outage.

The main concern of this study is to have an alternative device that are useful in

some terms of emergency just like calamity or disasters. The said device can be used

even without electricity. This device can gathered the solar power from the sun and can

store some battery power that can supply some mobile device.

Background of the Study

Solar technology is a variable one for charging mobile devices. A solar phone

charger harnesses the power of the sun to supply electricity to your devices or charge the

battery. The benefit of these portable devices is that they don't require an external

electricity source to function, making them great for outdoor enthusiasts or people who

many not have access to a power outlet right away (Selina, 2020).

A solar charger employs solar energy to supply electricity to device or charge

batteries. Generally, this solar charger are portable to supply power to devices wherever
2

there’s a sunlight. Depending on its solar panel it can produce voltage and can produce

hundreds of ampere-hour’s capacity enough to charge our devices.

Some solar panels are installed in a stationary location such as rooftops or

grounds. But basically the solar charger generally can place anywhere and can be

connected to a self-built battery bank to store energy for peak usage. It can also be

used as energy conservation device.

Solar power bank charger is a device that can charge our devices normally in a

portable way. It uses not only electricity but it also stores energy to device and use as a

charging medium to our gadgets especially when we travel and for energy conservation

purposes also (Nadal, 2021).

Today's world is energy driven and batteries have become an integral part as an

energy source considering the technological advances in consumer electronics to electric

vehicles, renewables, and smart grids. Batteries are energy limited and require

recharging. Recharging batteries with solar energy by means of solar cells can offer a

convenient option for smart consumer electronics (Gurung, 2018).

Solar energy is one of the many forms of renewable energy on earth. This energy

can be harnessed by using a solar cell or photovoltaic cell which converts sunlight

directly into electricity. Solar power can also be used in many small electrical devices

such as battery chargers. Solar powered battery chargers are fast gaining popularity as

they have been proven to be handy in many situations especially in the outdoors, being

portable and user friendly (Pandian, 2010).

3

Solar energy is a technology that has been increasing in popularity as it is further

developed. Improvements in the panels and coatings as well as solar tracking have made

solar energy more efficient (Kondracki, 2014).

A solar panel charges a rechargeable battery that in turn charges mobile. This

means you can charge your phone even when there is no sunlight - at night for example -

so long as you've charged your battery during the day.

Conceptual Framework (IPO)

On the basis of the foregoing concepts, theories, and findings of related literature,

studies presented and insights taken from them, a conceptual model is developed as

shown in Figure 1. It is composed of Input, Process, and Output stages also known as

IPO framework

Figure 1. Conceptual Model of the Study

4

Figure 1 shows the conceptual framework of the system in which the design

involves the integration of the hardware, the process that contains of developing, and the

output which also consists of the development of the said project prototype.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter includes the literature and studies that has a relation or connection on

the present study.

Solar

Solar cells are typically made from silicon, which is a semiconductor and can

generate electricity this process is known as the “photovoltaic effect”. Solar power

generation starts when solar panels absorb sunlight with photovoltaic cells, generating

direct current (DC) energy and then converting it to usable alternating current (AC)

energy with the help of inverter technology. AC energy then flows through the home’s

electrical panel and is distributed accordingly. The science of generating electricity with

solar panels all comes down to the photovoltaic effect. First discovered in 1839 by

Edmond Becquerel, the photovoltaic effect can be generally thought of as a characteristic

of certain materials (known as semiconductors) that allows them to generate an electric

current when exposed to sunlight. Most homeowners in the U.S. have access to net

metering, a major solar incentive that significantly improves the economics of solar. If

you have net metering, you can send power to the grid when your solar system is

overproducing (like during the day in sunny summer months) in exchange for credits on

your electric bill. Then, during hours of low electricity production (such as nighttime or

overcast days), you can use your credits to draw extra energy from the grid and meet

your household electricity demand. In a sense, net metering offers a free storage solution

to property owners who go solar, making solar an all-in-one energy solution (Energy

Sage, LLC, 2020).

8
9

Solar for Emergency

The major factor that drove us to this project is that it is one the method of

charging that utilizes the renewable sources of energy where we can overcome the

exhaustible usage of power and charge. It reduces the environmental pollution and is

much user friendly. During disasters and power outages, it can be used with ease and

with a long and forever durability of device and power. Even in the remote areas having

scarcity of electricity, such models can be used. It can be a bit rusty during the rainy and

foggy days and needs delicate care (Agarwal, 2016).

Solar power can satisfy energy demand in disaster situations where conventional

power sources have been damaged (Love, 2018).

Experts tell that solar energy is one of the most effective disaster preparedness

tools you can have. In today’s world, it’s important to ensure that your family’s basic

needs are met in the event of a catastrophic situation, and you can be ready for anything

with solar energy. After all, sunlight is a free and renewable source of energy, which

makes it an excellent emergency power solution. If you would like to truly be ready for

the unexpected, consider going off the grid. Off-grid solar energy systems use battery

banks to store the energy produced by photovoltaic panels. Installing an off-grid system

means you will always have adequate power to meet your family’s long-term energy

needs (Wind and Solar, 2015).

Being ready in case of an emergency is a 24/7 ordeal, but the promptest disaster

response systems require electricity to function. In the event of an emergency, power

lines may go down, and that can prevent many technologies from doing what they need

to. Backup generators and alternative power sources are often the solution, but finding a
10

cost-effective way to implement these can be a challenge for the local governments in

charge of them. Solar power can continue providing energy when the grid goes down. In

addition, it can be used in tandem with battery banks to ensure that early warning and

public announcement technologies function in any weather. Power and Battery systems

allow for continuous power in any location so that local emergency response plans can be

performed without unnecessary complications. When providing advance warning of

disasters, solar panels and battery banks can keep an emergency notification system

running in any weather condition so that local emergency response plans can be

successfully executed. Solar power and batteries can provide a convenient, cost-effective

solution to areas without access to the utility power needed to implement telecom

systems such as WiFi, base transceiver stations (BTS), cell phone networks, satellite

terminals, and so forth. It can also help maintain telecommunication systems in the event

of inclement weather, which is particularly useful for emergency situations (Sunwize,

2018).

According to statistics, only 19% of US citizens and 23% of Canadians have a

backup power source available to them. Many of these people are in rural areas and are

using gas or diesel powered generators. This is fine if you have enough fuel stockpiled to

last the duration, but what happens when the fuel runs out? While portable solar can be a

great and inexpensive option, it is not always the best choice during an emergency. Bad

weather can greatly hinder your ability to produce power from solar and even when the

sun is shining you only have a small window to attempt to get maximum output from

your panels (Waterlily, 2021).

11

Disasters and emergencies can strike when you least expect them. Events like

storms, floods, earthquakes, and fires can all wreak havoc on private and public

properties, as well as endanger the lives and wellbeing of our loved ones. Fortunately,

there are things we can do in order to mitigate the potential effects of a disaster, and one

of these is building a proper emergency kit (Palacpac, 2018).

Power bank

Power banks are best for emergencies and blackouts. A good power bank can be

an actual lifesaver in times of emergencies caused by natural disasters. It allows you to

stay connected and reach out to loved ones or call for help if needed. Sometimes

blackouts happen without any accompanying natural disaster, such as the Northeast

blackout of 2003 which left millions in the dark for up to 4 days (Radu, 2020).

In short, solar power banks and portable solar chargers offer convenience for the

consumer. While they are energy-efficient, they may not always be a money-saving

option. So, their worth will largely depend on their application and consumer preference.
