Global Citizenship Lesson Semester 4
Global Citizenship Lesson Semester 4
Alyssa Meyer
General Information
2nd grade
30-45 minutes
Home languages present (Mandarin)
EL level of students (one bridging and one expanding)
Concept(s)
Telling time to the nearest 5-minute intervals.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.C.7
Tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes,
using a.m. and p.m.
Objectives
Students will show their knowledge of telling time to 5-minute intervals with 75%
accuracy. They will explore content and demonstrate understanding by completing the
Nearpod practice slides.
Assessment
Using Nearpod activities I will be able to analyze student work, determine level of
understanding and identify potential learning gaps based on their constructed responses to
each question.
At the end of the unit students will take a posttest that further assesses their knowledge
and growth of the skills taught in this lesson/unit
Vocabulary/Literacy Skills
Listening/Speaking
Students will need to exhibit strong listening skills for each component of the lesson.
Key vocabulary words: intervals, analog clock, hour hand, minute hand
Procedure
Connection Based Learning
In order to understand 5-minute intervals, students must first access background
knowledge of counting by 5s. I will use this knowledge to familiarize students with the
concept of 5-minute intervals and how they correlate to numbers on the clock.
Ensuring that each student can access the materials for the lesson.
Teacher facilitated collaboration.
Discussing appropriate use of Nearpod and math tools (math work only, no
pictures or doodles unless math related).
Discussing appropriate collaboration procedures and routines (raising your hand
and waiting to be called on before you unmute, being respectful of others even if
they are incorrect.)
Growth mindset! Try, don’t be afraid to make mistakes.
Modifications
If you can count by 5s then you can tell time to 5-minute intervals. Then we will
review some of our key vocab words.
B. Development (Body) 15-20 min: Using my analog clock I will explain to students
that each number represents the hour of the day, but they also represent minutes.
This is where counting by 5’s comes in! First, we will simply practice counting by
5s as I point to each number on the clock. Then we will watch our Numberock
video for Telling Time to 5-Minute Intervals. Next, I will explain how we read the
time using the minute and hour hands.
Following my direct instruction students will complete some practice activities on
our Google Slides/Nearpod, I expect that we may have some difficulty with this at
first, but nevertheless their independent work will give me information about how
I can fill in the gaps.

C. Closure (Close) 5-7 min: Matching game (included in Nearpod), match the
analog clock to the digital clock. I’m going to include hour, half hour and 5-
minute interval times. I know some students will need another pass at this before
it clicks, but I want them to end the lesson feeling successful. I’m hoping they can
make some matches with hour/half hour times included.
