Issues faced by adolescents

Adolescence is the phase of life between childhood and adulthood, from ages
10 to 19. During this stage, people are more likely to overreact and become
emotional due to hormonal changes in their body. They will also have to
balance their needs as a child and their responsibilities as a growing adult. As a
result, this challenging phase may cause these following problems:

Alcohol & substance abuse

Drinking alcohol can reduce self-control

and increase risky behaviors, such as
unsafe sex or dangerous driving.
Worldwide, more than a quarter of people
aged 15-19 years old are current
drinkers, amounting to 155 million
adolescents.

Meanwhile, the number of drug abuse

among students in 2018 (from 13
provincial capitals of Indonesia) reached
2.29 million people

According to the global school-based student
health survey, 42% of adolescent boys and 37%
of adolescent girls were exposed to bullying.

Adolescent boys can get into fights at school
and they could also start to bullying others,
which is a major problem that adolescent boys
and girls have to deal with. Boys may fall into
bad company and be drawn to acts of violence,
vandalism, and aggression. They could be easily
swayed to own or use a firearm or a weapon
too. Impulse acts of violence can lead to serious
consequences, including death.
According to the WHO report, interpersonal
violence causes around 180 adolescent deaths
around the world. Teenage girls are likely to
suffer violence or aggression from a partner.

Approximately 12 million girls aged 15-19 years
and at least 777.000 girls under 15 years give

birth each year. Children under the age of 18 are

legally deemed incapable of consenting to
sexual activity and therefore all incidences of
sexual behavior involving children under 18
should be considered as a potential criminal or
child protection matter.

The result of violence and promiscuity among

adolescents also increase the risks of injury, HIV
and other sexually transmitted infections, death,
organ damage, mental health problems, poor
school performance and dropout, and early
pregnancy.

● Setting a minimum age for buying and consuming

alcohol and eliminate marketing and advertising to
minors are among the key strategies for reducing
drinking among adolescents.
● Self-protection education from physical and sexual
violence.
● Don’t have sex before marriage and avoid
alcohol and drug use.

We've discussed the challenges of being a teenager and
how to overcome them. We position ourselves as a friend
of that adolescent, and we will:
● Attempting to become closer with them so they are
more open about their feelings.
● Take care of them when they’re feeling overwhelmed.
● Always support and appreciate the things they like.
● Give them moral education.
● Bring them closer to God so they realize what's right
and wrong.
● Give them suggestions and input to become a better
person.
● Do not mock them or make them feel exiled.
