NAME: _______________________________ Total marks: 40

TIME: 45 minutes

1. [Maximum marks: 7]

A transformation with matrix A maps the point with coordinates (3, ) to the point with
coordinates (, − 1).

Matrix A is given as

−1 1
3 −2

a) Find the values of and .

b) Find the area of image of the triangle with vertices (0, 0), (6, 0), (2, 5).

c) Find the image of the point (2, 3) under the transformation with matrix 3 .

2. [Maximum marks: 7]

Let N be an enlargement with scale factor 2 centered at the origin, and let R be the rotation
through 30° anticlockwise about the origin.

a) The point (2, 1) is transformed using the rotation followed by the enlargement. Find
the coordinates of the image

b) Find the matrix representing the transformation resulting from the enlargement
followed by the rotation.

c) Find the area of image of the quadrilateral with vertices (0, 0), (3, 0), (2, 3), (0.5, 3) .as
it undergoes the transformation NR.

3. [Maximum marks: 10]

1
A point with coordinates (4, − 2)is reflected about the line = 3
 and then rotated through 45°
clockwise about the origin.

a) Find the exact coordinates of its image and hence find the distance between the point
and its image.

b) The image is then reflected about another line to return to the original coordinates of
the point. Write out the equation of this line.

c) A square with vertices (1, 0), (1, 1), (0, 1), (0, 0) undergoes the transformation in (b).
Calculate the coordinates of its image coordinates.
4. [Maximum marks: 8]

Transformation M has matrix

1.5 0.5
0.5 1.5

The diagram shows the unit square and its images under and 2 .

a) Find the coordinates of point .

b) Find the area of the parallelogram which is the image of the unit square under 6 .

c) Find the coordinates of the parallelogram of the unit square under 3 .

d) Write down a reflection matrix that does not alter the shape of these images.

5. [Maximum marks: 8]

Let R be the matrix representing a reflection in the line = 3 and let S be the matrix
representing a vertical stretch with scale factor 3.

a) Find the exact composite transformation A (RS) and B (SR) each as a single matrix.

b) Find the area of image of a triangle with vertices (1, 7), (5, 7), (2, 1)when it undergoes
transformation B first then A.

c) Explain without any calculation why undergoing transformation A first then B is a

vertical stretch and hence state the scale factor for this vertical stretch.
