Together as Journalists, we can make a real difference in the world - Perez

“I encourage you journalists, to stay true to your values and use your platform to make a
difference in the world. Let us always remember that truthful information is the foundation of
empowering journalism.”
Said by Mrs. Theresa Gomez-Perez a teacher at the University of the Philippines, and a
journalist on her keynote speech during the conduct of the Mini Pressconference held for the
Campus Journalists of Solsona National High School, March 3.

“Journalism is an essential pillar of our society, and it’s one that serves as a watch dog for
truth, transparency, and accountability. It’s our duty as journalists to uncover the facts and to
present them in a way that is objective, accurate and fair” she began by highlighting the
importance of journalism.

Perez stated that in the world where false facts and fake news abound, we must guarantee
that our reporting is established on the reality and facts. She personally witnessed the power of
factual reporting and how it can significantly affect change in the world.

“The truth is journalism can be a difficult and dangerous profession, but it is one of the most
important. Through truthful reporting, we have the power to educate, inform and empower
communities. It is up to us journalists to use our platform, to bring about change and make a real
difference in the world.” Perez highlighting the importance of Journalism despite its high level of
difficulty.

“Let us always remember that Truthful Information is the Foundation of Empowering


Journalism”. She stated that as campus journalists, we have the opportunity to influence the path
of journalism and improve the environment.

“So let us all commit to uphold the highest standard or journalism and to using our platform
to inform, educate and empower those around us. Together, we can make a real difference in the
world”. Perez finished her speech by giving the journalists a challenge to overcome.
Perez promotes Women Empowerment through Journalism

As a celebration of National Women’s Month, Mrs. Theresa Gomez-Perez, a Journalist and a


Teacher at the University of the Philippines, talks about the important role of women in the
community also in Journalism, during the conduct of the Mini Presscon for the journalists of
Solsona National High School, March 2.
The journalists listened vigilantly as Perez began her speech by stating that it is significant to
acknowledge the role of women in journalism.
“Growing up in my hometown, I witnessed the struggles of women who were marginalized
and oppressed.” she said. Perez spoke about the difficulties faced by marginalized women
throughout her statement. She considered journalism as a means of transforming their lives as
she desired to. “When I started my career in journalism, I made it my mission to report on the
challenges facing women in my community. I wrote extensively about issues, such as unequal
pay, domestic violence and reproductive rights and my reporting led to real change” she stated.

According to her, she was given the opportunity to work for the national newspaper as her
career developed, where she continued to cover topics affecting women globally. She seeks to
bring awareness to issues that have often being disregarded by the media. “I faced criticisms and
backlash from those who disagreed with my reporting. But I knew that it was important to stay
committed my values and my mission” she further explained.
She emphasized that Journalism can be a tough and challenging profession but she never
wavered in her commitment to empower women and promote gender equality. She constantly
inspires young women to seek journalism careers just like males do.
Perez insisted that women in journalism have a powerful voice, and it is our responsibility to
make use of that voice to influence change in the world.
A Teacher and Journalist talks about Journalism

Mrs. Theresa Gomez-Perez, a Journalist and a teacher at the University of the Philippines
talks about Truthful Information as a Foundation in Empowering Journalism and Women
Empowerment on her speech during the mini-press conference for the journalists of Solsona
National High School.
Based on her observation, women were facing different struggles and were being
marginalized and saw journalism as an instrument of changing their lives. She advocates that
women have their own voices and it is up to them to use it as a change in the world.
At the end of her speech, she paved the way for a new generation of female journalists, to
empower women and make a real difference in the world through truthful information.
