I. Concept Notes
Set – is a group of well – defined definite objects called elements (∈).
Capital letters are used to denote set and lower case for .
A set with no element is an empty set or null set, symbolized as Ø or {}.
Notation of sets. There are three common ways to describe a set.
1. Roster Notation
List each element of the set inside the symbol {}.
The use of three dots (…) called ellipsis means the ∈ of set continue infinitely.
A = {1,2,3,4,5}
2. Verbal Description
Describe the set in words
Set A is the set of counting numbers less than 6.
3. Set Builder Notation
List the properties which specify the whole common characteristics of the
elements ∈ of set not the actual ∈.
A = {x/ x is a counting numbers >6}
When a set is contained in another set, for instance, every element of set A is in set B,
then set A is a subset of set B. Written as A⊆B.
Every set (A) is a subset of itself (A⊆A).
An empty set is a subset of every set (A) (Ø⊆A).
If in set B there is at least one element not contained in Set A, it is referred to as proper
subset i.e Set A is a proper subset of B: A ⊆ B.
To get the total number of subsets, use the formula;
Total number of subsets = 2n
Where n is the total number of elements in the given set.

Find all the subsets of set A = {1,2,3,4} Subsets =
Solution: Given, A = {1,2,3,4} {}
{1}, {2}, {3}, {4},
{1,2}, {1,3}, {1,4}, {2,3},{2,4}, {3,4},
{1,2,3}, {2,3,4}, {1,3,4}, {1,2,4}
