I. Introduction

Natural Disasters don’t choose a day to happen, they can happen at any time and
any day. Being prepared before a natural disaster is key to survival. Obtaining
knowledge about this particular problem is a must to the community to ensure the
residents safety

A flood is an overflow of water that submerges land that is usually dry. In the
sense of "flowing water", the word may also be applied to the inflow of the tide.
Floods are an area of study of the discipline hydrology and are of significant concern
in agriculture, civil engineering and public health. Human changes to the environment
often increase the intensity and frequency of flooding, for example land use changes
such as deforestation and removal of wetlands, changes in waterway course or flood
controls such as with levees, and larger environmental issues such as climate change
and sea level rise. In particular climate change's increased rainfall and extreme
weather events increases the severity of other causes for flooding, resulting in more
intense floods and increased flood risk.

On November 15, 1991 Ormoc City in Leyte was once devastated by a colossal
flood killing about 8,000 people, wherein half of the victims’ bodies were never
recovered.
This flood is now known as the “Great Flood of 1972” in Philippine disaster
chronicle.

Thousands of lives are at risk when it comes to flooding, thus, I made an action
plan to give knowledge to the residents.

II. Problems And Solutions

 Poor sewage maintenance/system

- This problem is a hassle since this solution may be quite expensive, to solve this
though is to unclog the canals and sewage systems. Assigned workers can be a
quick solution to this. The other solution is to make the sewage system bigger.

 Insufficient amount of planted trees

- As mentioned we have to plant more trees in urban areas where floods are more
common unlike the rural areas where trees are common, flooding is rare.

How do you plant a tree?

- Planting a tree is easy, but it takes time so we have to make a cage around it so
people wont trample on the planted seedlings. Bury the seed in land and encage it,
it’s that simple but if you want to learn more about planting trees, here’s a more
advance explanation about the planting of trees.

 Not Enough Garbage Disposals

- Because of the insufficient amount of garbage disposals in the area, clogging is
common and it leads to flooding, we can fix this problem by having a dedicated
place to throw garbage and have it properly disposed, instead of residents
throwing their garbage wherever.

III. Before A Flood

- Before a flood you must be prepared so make you have these essentials.
1. First Aid Kit
2. Extra clothes
3. Food
4. Water

IV. During A Flood

- Don’t panic! You are now in a flood, turn off the main power switch in your
home so you won’t get electrocuted when water gets in contact with the water. If
there is an evacuation center, get your valuable belongings that may break when
in contact with water and bring them if you have time. You also bring your
essentials that have been mentioned in (before a flood). If there are no near by
evacuation centers, all you can do now is get as high as you can, people have been
seen on top of roofs to get away from the water.
V. After A Flood
- You have been rescued or you’re in an evacuation center, either way you still
have to be cautious since live wires are still open so be careful where you step.
When you get home check if everything is there and don’t turn on the main switch
yet wait for at least another day for it to dry. Clean the house since the water was
very dirty and full of contagious bacteria.
