Concepts:

History of Arnis
 Arnis is the national sport and martial arts in the Philippines.
 It is also known as Kali or Eskrima.
 This is a form of martial arts that’s focuses on a weapon base fighting such as knives, sticks and
bleaded weapons.
 Arnis was Declared by the Philippine’s National Sports and Martial Art last December 11, 2009.
 Practitioners of the sport are called Arnisador (Boys) and Arnisadora (girls).
 Remy Amador Presas (December 19,1936- August 28,2001) was the Founder of Modern Arnis.

Facilities of Arnis

 Dimensions: The Playing Area is square measuring 8.0 by 8.0 meters with a two (2) meters
minimum free zone around and a clear without any obstruction up to a height of 5 meters
 LINES of the PLAYING AREA: All lines of the playing surface are 5.08 cm. (2 inches) and must
be of different color from that of the floor and other lines previously drawn for other purposes.
 Boundary lines: Four lines mark the boundary of the playing area. The free zone distance
measuring 2.0 meters are drawn outside of the playing area.

Equipments of Arnis

 Wooden Stick: The wooden stick shall measure not less than 60 cm and not more than 90 cm in
length with a diameter of not less than 1.3 cm and not more than 3.8 cm.
 Foam: A cushion material- should be foaming the padded sticks and shall have a maximum grip
diameter not greater than 3.81 cm.
 Head Protector: refers to a pair of protective head gear to include an impact-worthy face mask.

FIVE FORMS OF PLAY

1. ESPADA y DAGA – (Sword and Dagger) or the long wooden sword and short wooden dagger.
2. SOLO BASTON – (Single Stick) In which a single long wooden stick or rattan cane is used.
3. SINAWALI – so called because of the intricate movements of two bastons used in criss-cross
manner, or simply called doble baston (two sticks)
4. PINGA – or long bamboo stick
5. MANO-MANO, BUNO or DUMOG

THREE TRADITIONAL TRAINING METHODS:

1. MUESTRATION or PANDALAGA – Teaches the art of ALDABIS (Striking) for defense and
offense through consistent practice.
2. LARGA MUTON or LABANANG TOTOHANAN – where two practitioners engage in free
practice of contest for testing fighting skills.
3. SANGA AT PATAMA or SOMBRA TABAK – which teaches striking, thrusting, and
blocking parrying in a pre-arranged fighting skills.
